Experience Lübeck's history on the fascinating summer promenade!

The historical charm of Lübeck is being colorfully reworked this season. The popular scenic tour “Summer Promenade” begins on April 8, 2025 and is offered by the European Hanseatic Museum (EHM) every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. until the end of September. The participants are taken back to around 1900, when the last head of the “Monastery and Almshouse to the Castle”, H. E. A. Pappel, leads the visitors through the city's eventful history.

The “Summer Promenade” brings Lübeck’s past to life, with a particular focus on the industrial rise and the challenges that came with it. Here guests learn exciting stories about the lives of the poor, the unfortunate and the forgotten. This informative experience combines historical knowledge transfer with scenic play and promises to provide visitors with an entertaining and educational experience.

Graduation with tradition

To top off the tour, the participants toast the future of Lübeck, either with the typical Lübeck Rotspon or non-alcoholic grape juice. The meeting point for the tour is the inner courtyard of the castle monastery, and the event lasts approximately one and a half hours. For 13 euros (reduced 10 euros), those interested can book tickets in the EHM ticket shop and take an exciting look behind the scenes of the old trading town.

Lübeck, often referred to as the “Queen of the Hanseatic League”, has established itself as one of the most important cities of Hanseatic trade for over 500 years. Founded in 1143 by Adolf vonSchauburg and revitalized by Henry the Lion in 1157, the city was granted the status of an imperial city by Emperor Frederick II in 1226. The destruction that Lübeck suffered in the Second World War was overcome thanks to Hanseatic civic spirit, which led to an impressive restoration of the historical sights.

A city full of history and modernity

Lübeck was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987 and invites visitors to its old town island, which is surrounded by the waterways of the Trave, Wakenitz and the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. These conditions give the city the charm of a port city in which tradition and modernity blend harmoniously. The medieval streets invite you to explore, while modern shops and cultural events enrich city life.

The “Summer Promenade” is not only an impressive walk through Lübeck’s history, but also a wonderful opportunity to experience and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this city. So if you feel like traveling back in time, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to find out more about Lübeck's eventful past and toast the future in a friendly atmosphere.
