Lübeck without a fireboat: Dangerous waiting time until 2025!
There is currently a worried mood among the firefighters in Lübeck. As the Lübecker Nachrichten reports, the city currently does not have an operational fireboat. The old fireboat “Senator Emil Peters” was retired in mid-September, meaning that in an emergency the fire department has to rely on land-based units and smaller rescue boats. The replacement for the fireboat is still a long time coming as the delivery date for the new ship is unclear. The new fireboat was originally scheduled to go into service in the summer of 2023, but the date was postponed and the transfer is now planned for the first quarter of 2025. Delays are due to global political challenges, bottlenecks in supply chains and technical adjustments during construction. The current status is that the new fireboat should go into service between May and August 2025. Firefighters then have to be instructed in the technology and handling characteristics of the new boat to ensure seamless integration into operational procedures. If there are further delays after May 2025, the Lübeck fire department plans to apply for an exemption for the old boat.
The effort required to procure the new fireboat is considerable: the plans for this were already decided in 2018, with a budget of around 3.2 million euros. However, there are legitimate concerns about the safety of the water table and the resulting fire protection. Firefighters and citizens are therefore hoping for rapid progress in the delivery of the new equipment.
Financing urban development funding
Another area is about urban development funding in Schleswig-Holstein. A total of 70.7 million euros are available this year, of which Lübeck alone will receive 3 million euros for the redesign of a town center in Moisling. These funds are intended for the development and improvement of urban infrastructure projects, but a dispute is brewing between the state and municipalities. From 2026, a new directive is to introduce upper limits for funding, which is met with massive criticism in local politics. The municipalities are demanding changes and more participation from the state, while the state parliament opposition is putting pressure on the government to achieve better cooperation.
Events and new openings in Lübeck
Aside from these important topics, Lübeck also has cultural news to offer. The physiotherapy practice Fysiostil is organizing a women's health week from November 10th to 14th with workshops and lectures that promise exciting insights into various health topics. The restaurant “La Goccia” on Koberg by Oscar Renna will also be opening just in time for the new season. The restaurant offers 85 indoor seats and 75 terrace seats, expanding the city's gastronomic landscape, which is always very popular thanks to its diverse cuisine.
Finally, there is also a lot going on in the Herzogtum Lauenburg district: around 30 bridges and underpasses on district roads are being checked, which can lead to temporary closures. Road safety for citizens is of course a priority here.
