Lübeck launches Housing First”: New hope for the homeless!
A breath of fresh air is blowing through Lübeck: This year, the Hanseatic city is launching the innovative “Housing First” model to effectively counteract homelessness. This reports ln online. Diakonie Nord Nord Ost (DNNO) is responsible for implementing the project and is responsible for equipping the apartments and selecting the suitable people who will move into these apartments.
The city of Lübeck is supporting the financing of the initiative with 100,000 euros over three years. “Housing First” takes an unconventional approach by not only offering homeless people housing, but also making it possible to do so without the previously usual requirements such as abstinence or therapy. Instead, the project relies on the voluntary nature of using the relevant support services.
The concept in detail
Anyone who wants to rent an apartment simply has to prove that they have been in the homeless assistance system for at least six months and are able to communicate. Access to the housing market is often very difficult, which is why the DNNO is now actively working with various housing associations and private landlords to find suitable accommodation.
The Diakonie is currently looking for ten apartments in Lübeck. A partnership has already been concluded with Vonovia, which is providing DNNO with 120 apartments. The Lübeck Building Association also supports the project by granting the city naming rights for 900 apartments. “The experiences with accommodating homeless people have been mostly positive,” adds the DNNO and is optimistic.
Broad support among citizens
The majority of Lübeck's citizens support the project, and there is positive feedback from politicians. However, “Housing First” is not the only measure in the fight against homelessness. Emergency shelters and emergency sleeping places remain necessary for acute situations, as well as on diakonie-nordnordost.de is emphasized.
The challenges for homeless people in Lübeck are great. Homelessness often results from personal crisis situations and social difficulties that make finding your own home difficult. Diakonie's advisory services not only include the provision of living space, but also regular visits from educational staff to support independent living.
Part of a larger plan
The “Housing First” concept is a common approach to combating homelessness in Germany. The federal government plans to reduce the number of homeless people in Germany by 2030 deutschlandfunkkultur.de reported. In cities like Berlin and Bremen, the concept is already part of the social support offerings. For Lübeck, “Housing First” could be the first step into a new era of housing provision.
Whether the model will bear fruit as it has in other cities remains to be seen, but the signs are good. With strong social support and a clear concept, Lübeck is taking the necessary step to lead homeless people back into a self-determined life.
