Musical magic in Lübeck: The Schubertiade delights with viola and piano!
A musical highlight recently took place in Lübeck: TheSchubertiad, organized by the Possehl Foundation Lübeck, brought the talented artists Danang Dirhamsyah and Kirill Volkov to the stage of the music hall in Haus Eden. The audience was thrilled by the performances, which combined both romance and technical brilliance.
In the first half of the concert two transcribed songs were performed by Franz Schubert for viola and piano, “Love Message” and “Verstarung” from Winterreise, presented. These works are not only a testament to Schubert's sensitive melodies, but also an important connection to the themes of love and longing often found in his music. This was then followed byPiano Sonata in A major, D 664, which impressively presented Danang Dirhamsyah.
A masterpiece of romanticism
The Piano Sonata, also known as the “Little” A major sonata, was composed by Schubert in the summer of 1819 and is famous for its lyrical character as well as its simple, melodic structure. Lasting 23 minutes, it consists of three succinct movements: Allegro moderato, Andante and Allegro. This sonata, which is less extensive than other works by Schubert, reflects his youthful infatuation and is particularly popular with piano lovers. In practice, the sonata is repeatedly highlighted as an example of Schubert's distinctive style.
In the second part of the concert, Kirill Volkov, together with Dirhamsyah, convinced the listeners with the song “To Sing on the Water” and theArpeggione Sonata, D 821. Originally written for a newly invented 19th-century instrument, this piece is now played primarily by cello or viola and requires both technical skill and musical sensitivity. Volkov, who studies at the Lübeck University of Music and is co-founder of the chamber orchestra Camerata Hanseatica Lübeck, showed his extraordinary talent.
A close connection to music education
Both artists are also active in music education and are committed to training young musicians. In doing so, they make a significant contribution to promoting musical culture in the region. The audience responded to their performances with great applause and demanded an encore, which was met with the song “Du bist die Ruh”. A very special experience for music lovers in Lübeck!
If you're interested in more music, you can look forward to the upcoming concerts. On December 7, 2025, Danang Dirhamsyah will give a solo recital, followed by a concert entitled “Four Hands in Advent” on December 13, 2025, together with Hermann Valdez. Admission is free, but donations are welcome to continue to support the valuable work of the Possehl Foundation.
The opera lover reports on the great enthusiasm of the audience and the high artistic quality of the performance, which keeps the tradition of the Schubertiads alive.
