Winners of the Lübeck City Mathematics Olympiad have been announced!

On November 13, 2025, the Audimax of the University of Lübeck shone in a festive atmosphere as the 21st Lübeck City Mathematics Olympiad reached its climax. Around 98 talented students from grades 5 to 13 came together to put their mathematical skills to the test. These talented participants qualified in the school round in September and have now been honored for their achievements.

The award ceremony was impressive: a total of seven first prizes, twelve second prizes and thirteen third prizes were awarded. Each of the young mathematicians received a certificate, while the prize winners were also awarded book vouchers. The students of the Johanneum in Lübeck were particularly proud, winning a total of four first prizes as well as the university cup, presented by Prof. Dr. Helge Braun.

Commitment to STEM education

The Lübeck Mathematics Initiative (LIMa) plays a central role in promoting mathematics and science education in the region. This valuable work is supported by, among others, the Possehl Foundation and the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of the State of Schleswig-Holstein LIMa website informed. In this context, various programs for study and career orientation in MINT careers are offered, also for girls in grades 8 and 9.

But LIMa's commitment does not go unnoticed: at the award ceremony, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Prestin was honored with a trophy of honor for his tireless commitment, presented by Martin Scheel. This shows how important individual commitment is to promoting young talent.

Qualification for the future

An even more important aspect of the Mathematics Olympiad is the qualification for the upcoming state round in February 2026 in Flensburg. The best can continue to demonstrate their skills there and hope to qualify for the national round in May or June 2026 in Hamburg. This all happens as part of an extensive competition that consists of several rounds: from the school round to the regional round in Lübeck.

With the MINT Action Plan 2.0, Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger has sent a further signal to make MINT subjects more attractive for future generations. The plan bundles support measures and aims to combat the shortage of skilled workers in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology Education server can be read.

The presentation of the MINT guide and the “MINT – Creating the Future” initiative is intended to increase the number of qualified applicants in technical professions. The education offensive is important in order to sustainably promote young people's interest in MINT subjects.

The 21st Lübeck City Mathematics Olympiad was more than just a competition: it was a sign of change and hope for MINT education in Schleswig-Holstein and beyond. We can look forward to seeing which talents will emerge from this competition and enrich future generations with their knowledge.
