Water, enjoyment and fair trade: Lübeck celebrates a special raft trip!
The Lübeck group around Martina Böttcher can celebrate! On September 13, 2025, she announced the great success of the fair trade raft trip in Lübeck. On this special day, fans and supporters had the opportunity to take part in the unique fair breakfast on the water. The idea of organizing this campaign on a raft in front of the picturesque old town of Lübeck came as part of an annual competition in the World Shops network in Germany, where the aim is to find the most exciting place for a fair breakfast. Böttcher and her team are sure that with this location they have achieved a real coup that will not be easily surpassed.
A very special highlight was the ride with Dilara Burkhardt, who works for the European Parliament and came from Kiel. She must have been thrilled by the cozy waves and the captivating ambience on the water - after all, she is also a new mother.
Committed colleagues and new goals
Many thanks were also expressed during the breakfast. Böttcher paid particular attention to Ilona Jarabek from the Music and Congress Hall (MuK) and Barbara Schwartz from Lübeck and Travemünde Marketing (LTM). Both are exceptionally committed to fair trade and sustainable actions.
Another exciting topic was the so-called chocolate bet with Mayor Jan Lindenau. The aim is to distribute around 100 kilograms of fair chocolate products in Lübeck by September 26th. At the start of the campaign, the mayor weighed 97 kilograms. The excitement increases as to how much chocolate will actually find a new owner in the end. There has already been positive feedback from participating stores, but exact interim results are not yet available.
Fair trade in focus
Fair trade has become firmly established in Lübeck and beyond. According to the Weltladen it is based on an equal partnership between the global north and south. The World Shops Convention, which was passed in 1997, represents the basis for fair trade in Germany and involves all key players. These principles were developed through years of dialogue and are consistent with the ten principles of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). These include, among other things, the guarantee of a fair income for producers and the commitment to ecological sustainability.
With such committed initiatives such as the Lübeck Fair Breakfast on the Raft and the Chocolate Bet, Fair Trade is becoming more than just a trend. It impressively shows that the cohesion in the community is strong and everyone can make a contribution. Together for fair trade – this is what the future looks like!
