From 143 to 80 kilos: Cathrin Anders' impressive transformation!

Cathrin Anders from Preetz has had an impressive journey. At the age of 29, she lost over 60 kilograms after gastric surgery. Her story is a powerful example of the fight against obesity, a disease that can be extremely stressful not only physically but also psychologically. Before the surgery, Anders suffered from numerous health problems, including back problems, knee pain and migraines. “I felt uncomfortable in my body and was constantly tired,” she admits. She was also bullied at school because of her overweight.

The decision to have a stomach reduction was not easy for Anders. She had struggled with obesity since she was a child and had tried various methods - from diets to intensive exercise programs - without long-term success. Her scales showed an incredible 143 kilograms with a BMI of over 50. But the turning point came when she decided to undergo treatment in the obesity center at the West Coast Hospital in Heide. This decision was accompanied by extensive preparation, which included advice on sports, nutrition and psychology, as well as a special diet to optimally prepare the body for the massive procedure.

The intervention and its effect

Gastric surgery is a radical step in which part of the stomach is removed. According to Gesundheitinformation.de, bariatric procedures in Germany have increased sharply since 2010 - from around 5,000 to around 26,250 in 2023. More than half of the operations are carried out on people between 30 and 49 years old. Fortunately, it appears that many of those who have surgery experience significant weight loss. Anders himself lost around 20 kilograms in just one to two months and has lost a total of over 60 kilograms within nine months. Her dress size reduced from 52/54 to 42/44.

The health improvements are also remarkable: her blood counts have increased and the migraine attacks have decreased. “I feel much fitter and more energetic now,” enthuses Anders.

A new attitude to life

Despite the success, a challenge remains: Anders suffers from excess skin, which she finds stressful. This physical change is often accompanied by a psychological upheaval - many patients need time to get used to their new appearance. “I have developed a new mindset and am trying to deal with the psychological stress,” she explains.

In addition to her own recovery, Anders is keen to encourage other affected people. She wants to show that with the right support and the right decisions, you are not alone. Together with her partner, she has changed her diet and now eats more whole grain products - although with a smile she also eats a ready-made pizza in moderation.

Anders' story is not only inspiring, it also shows the reality and challenges that come with obesity and its treatment. Anders has already made her plans for the future steps in her life. She wants to continue to stay active, eat healthy and encourage others. “It's a long road, but I took the first step - and it was crucial,” she summarizes.
