Sunshine and thunderstorms: changeable northern Germany awaits us!

A look at the sky gives you an idea: the weather in northern Germany is about to become a hallmark of summer. Today, June 21st, 2025, a high pressure area over the Czech Republic will bring summery temperatures and lots of sunshine. While temperatures of up to 30 degrees are expected in Hamburg, it remains a little cooler on Sylt at around 22 degrees. Parts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can also expect maximum temperatures of up to 29 degrees. The outlook for the rest of the day is mostly clear, with only a light wind that shouldn't spoil the fun of swimming. Welt reports that it will be cool next night, with temperatures between 11 and 16 degrees.

But Sunday promises another hit - with highs of up to 34 degrees in Hamburg and 33 degrees in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. However, you shouldn't decide too early, because towards the evening it gets darker and thundery showers are possible, accompanied by a rapid increase in wind, as the weather service DWD warns. While the temperatures on the coasts still fluctuate between 26 and 29 degrees, it gets really warm inland. Heavy showers and thunderstorms could be expected on Monday night, which could temporarily affect summer fun.

The weather in detail

A changeable weather pattern is expected for Monday. In the early morning hours it starts with sometimes stormy winds and temperatures of up to 27 degrees in the Mecklenburg inland. Coastal communities are expected to only reach around 18 degrees. On Sylt the temperature remains mild with similar lows, before showers and thunderstorms can occur again during the day. Stronger winds can be expected, especially on the coasts, blowing from southwest to western directions.

Climatic changes and outlook

The North German Climate Monitor, published by the Umweltbundesamt, provides important information about long-term climate changes in the region. Numerous climatic parameters are examined here, including summer days, hot days and the number of heavy rain days. A detailed analysis of this data provides valuable insights into the weather changes that could await us in the coming years.

Overall, the summer weather in Northern Germany makes you want to go on trips to the water and have a cozy barbecue evening in the garden, even if you should be prepared for changeable weather conditions. Keep your eyes open and enjoy the sunny hours before the weather changes again!
