North daycare center: A ray of hope for addicts and carers!

In the CMA day care center in the north, which is run by Elke Valentin-Stargardt, people with addiction problems receive targeted support. Since 2009, the facility has been committed to improving the quality of life of those affected and creating appropriate specialist knowledge. With 25 places, the day care center not only offers a structured daily routine, but also housing options for people who are experiencing social difficulties. The main goal is to create a safe, drug-free space.

This help is particularly needed when there are no personal social networks and working is no longer possible. Daycare carers must ensure that those affected take responsibility for their actions. Everyday tips and life support are provided here that are tailored to the individual needs of visitors.

Diverse offers for those affected

The day center offers a wide range of activities: from communal breakfast and lunch, to social rehabilitation and leisure activities. Trained employees support visitors in maintaining their housing, securing their material livelihoods and in finding treatment options for addiction. Also essential: the outpatient participation service, which aims to improve people's independent lifestyle in their living environment.

The offer also includes practical life support and crisis intervention to counteract relapses. The supervisors rely on voluntary and active cooperation when working together, which forms the basis for a sustainable relationship. An application for integration assistance can be submitted to the social welfare office of the Aurich district, where help is offered with the application.

Overcoming the challenges

But working in the daycare center is not without its challenges. Dealing with deaths and suicides is part of everyday life for employees. These difficult experiences require a specific form of supervision and support to ensure the health and well-being of caregivers. Visitors often suffer from comorbid disorders in which mental illness and addiction are closely linked.

An often overlooked issue is the stigma surrounding addiction. Waves of fear of contact that those affected experience make it difficult for them to reintegrate into society. Addiction is a widespread problem that manifests itself not only in drug-related addictions, but also in behavioral addictions such as excessive use of the Internet or excessive work.

The path to rehabilitation

An important step for many sufferers is the path to rehabilitation. This can be initiated by a variety of bodies, such as addiction counseling centers, social services in hospitals or practicing doctors. Addiction self-help groups offer support for those affected and their families both before and after rehab. Information on applying for addiction rehab is also available from the German Federal Pension Insurance.

“Life without addiction” is not only the motto of the NDR charity campaign 2025, but is also a central concern that is intended to enable further donation projects to support addiction support projects. The work in the CMA day care center shows how important structure is in everyday life for people with addiction problems and that there are bright spots in difficult times - be it through patient successes or simply through human encounters.
