60 years of the Molfsee Open Air Museum: Celebrate with us!

On June 19, 2025, a very special anniversary will be celebrated in the Molfsee open-air museum: the largest open-air exhibition venue in northern Germany will be 60 years old! The museum, which extends over a spacious area of 40 hectares, fascinates its visitors with over 60 historical buildings that focus on the everyday and cultural history of Schleswig-Holstein from the 16th century to the present. The fitting motto for the big birthday is “Dust and Confetti”.

As a central place for everyday culture, the open-air museum not only offers a look into the past, but also new attractions. With the virtual exhibition “Licht.Gestalten” visitors can expect an innovative addition: fictional historical figures take them on a journey through history. The two new permanent exhibitions are particularly worth seeing: the topic of wind as a resource is examined in a historic mill from Hollingstedt, while the other exhibition presents the development and working methods of the museum over the last six decades.

Insight into history

The founding of the open-air museum was planned in the 1950s before it opened in 1965. Since then, buildings from various regions of Schleswig-Holstein and the Danish border region have been dismantled, transported and rebuilt in Molfsee. The thematic diversity ranges from farmhouses and workshops to windmills and watermills, all of which represent important aspects of regional culture.

What is particularly noteworthy is that the museum attracts around 140,000 visitors every year. The number of guests is on the rise and the positive feedback about the attractiveness of the location speaks for itself. Numerous events take place on the birthday itself, including line dancing and tai chi workshops, live music and an inviting picnic area. Admission is free for the anniversary, which will certainly help attract many curious people and families from the region.

Experience cultural diversity

The Molfsee open-air museum not only offers its visitors an insight into everyday life in times gone by, but also the opportunity to experience entertaining and educational seasonal events from spring to autumn. This includes markets, theater performances, concerts and lectures that illuminate the cultural facets of Schleswig-Holstein. A historical fair in the museum is also accessible free of charge and provides entertainment.

The open-air museum's collection includes tens of thousands of exhibits, which can be found thematically in permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions. The assemblies are sorted according to their regional origin, which provides exciting insights into the cultural and historical differences between the various areas. The influences from Central Europe and Scandinavia, which have shaped the development of the region, are particularly reflected here.

On June 19th, Prime Minister Daniel Günther is expected to be the guest of honor at the official reception. This means that the open-air museum's anniversary will not only be a celebration for the local residents, but also an important event for the entire Schleswig-Holstein region. If you are looking for a varied and informative experience, you should not miss this event!
