Bremen is experiencing a container boom: throughput increases by 10 percent!
The ports of Bremen have seen enormous growth in recent months. As the daily news reported, container throughput in the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven increased by ten percent in 2025 compared to the previous year. This means that business in the domestic ports is running better than ever, which was not necessarily to be expected in times of challenging global economic conditions.
But it's not just container traffic that's improving. Sales of bulk goods such as grain, coal and ore are also showing positive developments. Experts see these positive trends as a sign of a stabilization of the global economy, despite the ongoing military conflicts and the strict US customs policy.
A look at the overall numbers
In Bremerhaven alone, around 4.4 million TEU (20-foot containers) were handled in 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 6.3 percent. The numbers clearly show that Bremerhaven plays a central role in the region's economic cycle - not only for its residents, but also for industry and trade.
Challenges and setbacks
The Bremen ports are also facing a decline in bulk cargo handling in Bremen, which is largely due to the politically desired decarbonization of the industry. Nevertheless, the Senator for Economic Affairs, Kristina Vogt, remains optimistic and emphasizes the importance of the planned deepening of the Outer Weser in order to ensure the competitiveness of the ports.
