Bremen is investing 350 million euros: new opportunities for cycle paths and ports!
There are major investments coming up in Bremen! Over the next two years, the city plans to invest 350 million euros in various infrastructure projects. The focus is diverse and ranges from ports to the energy transition to the development of commercial areas and cycle paths. Particular attention is also paid to the energy-efficient renovation of schools and daycare centers as well as the construction of new gymnasiums, which will promote young talent and provide modern sports facilities.
The investment package approved comes from the red-green-red coalition and is part of a more extensive plan: Over the next twelve years, the state government wants to invest a total of 2.5 billion euros, which will also use additional federal funds. With a total volume of 942 million euros from the federal government's special fund for infrastructure and climate neutrality, the course is being set for sustainable development. The details of the medium-term use of the remaining funds are to be determined in the second quarter of 2026.
Renewable energies and port expansion in Bremerhaven
An interesting construction project is also taking place in Bremerhaven. The new energy port is being planned in the southern fishing port at Blexer Bogen, which will have more than 100 hectares. This port will not only serve as a transshipment point for liquid gas and hydrogen, but will also provide parts for the construction of wind farms. Senator for Economic Affairs Kristina Vogt sees the project as one of the most important development steps for Bremerhaven in recent decades. The Energy Port is also expected to contribute to the creation of up to 10,000 new jobs by 2033.
Planning is already in full swing and an initial decision is expected this month. The Energy Port could realistically be completed by 2033, although financing the project could require federal support. However, critics, including environmental associations such as BUND, warn of possible ecological consequences as the port is to be built in an EU bird sanctuary and fear that the Energy Port represents a repeat of the failed Bremerhaven offshore terminal, which was rejected by the Federal Administrative Court in 2021.
Promotion and modernization
The immediate measures, which also affect Bremerhaven, include the modernization of the container terminals and the renovation of the German Maritime Museum. The city has 41 million euros available for these measures as part of a municipal emergency program. This not only strengthens the infrastructure, but also honors the maritime heritage, which further enhances the region.
Overall, it shows that Bremen and Bremerhaven are not only focusing on short-term development with these investments, but are also investing in the future in the long term. The strategy of both modernizing the infrastructure and creating attractive jobs in the field of renewable energies makes it clear that the Hanseatic cities are well positioned to master the challenges of the next few years.
