Bremen is investing 670,000 euros in climate adaptation for citizens!

Bremer Umweltberatung (BUB) is the big winner of new financial support. On August 11, 2025, the BUB was presented with a funding notice for almost 670,000 euros - a sum that comes from funds from the European Union and the state of Bremen. Senator Kathrin Moosdorf and Ralf Stapp from BAB – The Development Bank for Bremen and Bremerhaven, announced this at a ceremonial handover. This project is entitled “Facing challenges, seizing opportunities – time for climate adaptation” and aims to support citizens in the state of Bremen in adapting their properties to the climate crisis.

But what does this actually mean for the local people? Bremer Umweltberatung will expand its range of advice and address not only private individuals, but also companies, housing associations and allotment garden associations. A particular focus is on intensive on-site advice that provides information about climate adaptation measures and various funding options. Among other things, measures are planned for the creation of infiltration areas, the unsealing of areas, as well as green facades and planted roofs. Workshops that cover topics such as unsealing and roof and facade greening round off the offering.

Sustainable urban development

As part of the project, the new “Sponge City funding program” will also be installed, which will come into force from January 2025. This innovative concept bundles funding for measures such as green roofs and facades, the use of rainwater and gray water and will also include unsealing. The aim is to store rainwater like a sponge and release it during hot periods in order to improve the urban climate. Extreme weather events such as heat and heavy rain are actively combated.

In addition, the “Adaptation of Urban and Rural Areas to Climate Change” program, which has been funded by the federal government since 2020, is bringing a breath of fresh air to urban development. It supports municipalities in planning and implementing climate-friendly measures, which also include securing and connecting green and open spaces. The preservation of biodiversity plays a central role here. The new funding aims to create green islands in the city and also offers numerous projects that aim to retain rainwater and design surfaces with green elements.

To date, a total of 344 projects have been funded in various cities and communities. The development towards a thriving and climate-resilient city is not only a right step, but a necessary one. It turns out that a lively, green infrastructure not only enhances the cityscape, but also improves the quality of life of its citizens.

For Bremen, all of this brings a clear message: climate protection and climate adaptation are not separate issues, but part of a larger whole. The initiatives of the BUB, the BAB and the federal government are proof that “together” is very important when it comes to climate change. Questions about implementation or applying for funding can be asked directly from Bremer Umweltberatung. It will be exciting to see how the city develops and what positive effects the funding promises will bring in the next few years.
