Bremen protects hedgehogs: robotic lawnmowers are only allowed to mow during the day!

Bremen has passed a new law that will bring about drastic change for all robotic lawnmower owners. With a general decree that came into force on October 18, 2025, the use of robotic lawnmowers is limited to daylight hours. The measure was taken to protect endangered species, particularly hedgehogs. This reports Gabot.

The hedgehog population in Germany has been steadily declining in recent years, and Bremen is no exception. These cute little animals are now marked as an endangered species on the mammal red lists. Robotic lawn mowers pose a serious danger, especially at night, as they roll over everything in their path. Serious injuries are often the result, and not only hedgehogs, but also moles and domestic amphibians are affected by this problem.

New regulation in detail

The new regulation states that in the future, robotic lawnmowers may only be operated during the day from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. Anyone who does not comply with this regulation will face a fine of up to 25,000 euros - even without any animal being harmed. This is to ensure that these vulnerable animals are not endangered.

Fortunately, this initiative not only promotes the protection of hedgehogs, but also increases awareness of nature conservation among the population. The city of Bremen is setting an example for the preservation of local animal species and setting an example of how one can take responsibility towards nature.

Context and implications

In view of the massive decline in hedgehog populations in Germany, which is due not only to the dangers posed by robotic lawnmowers, but also to various other environmental factors, this measure is welcomed by environmentalists. Hedgehogs, especially the species Erinaceus europaeus, are under special protection. Restricting nighttime operations could make a crucial difference for many animal species in urban habitats.

This measure shows how important it is to work to preserve biodiversity. It remains to be hoped that other cities will follow Bremen's example and find similar regulations to protect wildlife. Ultimately, preserving biodiversity is not only important for nature, but also for us humans - because we can only live and thrive in a healthy ecosystem.

The following applies to all robotic lawnmower users in Bremen: Pay attention to the time when you mow your lawn! Protecting our animal companions should be important to all of us.
