Bremen secures Boniface: The striker should bring the hat-trick!
SV Werder Bremen pulled off a coup on Deadline Day of the summer transfer window and signed Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen. The 24-year-old striker will move to the Weserstadion on a one-year loan deal, but without the option to buy. This reports Picture. Boniface was only used sporadically at Leverkusen recently, as he was only the third choice in the striker hierarchy behind Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane. A move to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia fell through in January and he failed to join AC Milan due to a failed medical.
Peter Niemeyer, the head of professional football at Werder, was extremely positive about the new signing. “The conversations with those responsible were convincing,” Boniface is quoted as saying. His goal is to actively contribute to achieving the club's goals for the season. As explosive as his performances were, Boniface's susceptibility to injuries - two cruciate ligament tears during his time at Bodø/Glimt - had deterred some clubs from signing him, which makes Bremen's decision all the more important.
An important acquisition despite injury concerns
In order to ease the burden on the club's management, two club representatives, Clemens Fritz and Peter Niemeyer, were cited who have no concerns about the commitment. Boniface was fit in the summer and completed the entire pre-season with Leverkusen. “We have brought in a player who can play a big role in the offensive,” emphasized Fritz. In the last Bundesliga second half of the season, Boniface scored two goals and contributed one assist in nine appearances, with a total of 32 goals and 12 assists in 61 competitive games for the club.
In order to be able to realize the transfer, Bayer 04 Leverkusen shared the salary burden with Werder. The salary of around four million euros will largely be borne by the Leverkusen team, although the club management felt it was important to act as quickly as possible. The transfer ends SV Werder Bremen's lengthy search for a striker.
Current injury situation at Werder
This new addition comes at the right time, as Werder is currently facing several injury cases. Among other things, players like Marco Friedl and Maximilian Wöber are currently unavailable for action due to various injuries. An overview of the current injury concerns at Werder Bremen shows that the defense is particularly badly affected.
| player | position | Injury |
|---|---|---|
| Rogerio | Left defender | Muscular problems |
| Olivier Deman | Left defender | Broken ankle |
| Amos Pieper | Central defender | Hip injury |
| Jens Stage | Central midfield | Foot injury |
| Maximilian Wöber | Central defender | Hamstring injury |
| Marco Friedl | Central defender | Inner ligament injury |
| Mitchell Weiser | Right defender | Cruciate ligament tear |
| Kevin Paredes | Left midfield | Foot surgery |
Werder Bremen's Schmidt killed two birds with one stone. While they have found a talented striker to bolster the offense, it is hoped that the injured can return soon and help the team. The pressure on Bremen is not decreasing, and with Victor Boniface a breath of fresh air could blow through the team.
