New web service in Bremerhaven: Receive news quickly and securely!

There is now a new service in Bremerhaven that is intended to help citizens always stay up to date: a web push notification service for selected news. How Bremerhaven.de reported, interested parties can subscribe to this service without any personal data being stored. Only the selection of subscribed messages is saved locally on the user's device.

This means that, in line with current data protection guidelines, which do not create an identifiable user profile, users can be assured that their data remains protected. The new service uses “Web Push”, a process provided directly by the browser provider. What's also exciting is that this notification function is not supported by all devices, which means that the user has to pay attention to whether their browser is open in the background so as not to miss any information.

Notifications and privacy

Users have the freedom to adjust their privacy settings and deactivate the notification function at any time. If Bremerhaven.de is not visited for 14 days, the notifications can be automatically deactivated. Even if up-to-date information is not available, there will be no notification - a solid solution to avoid flooding users with unnecessary information. But caution is advised: Since the service provider comes from a third country, the USA, there is a certain risk as an adequate level of data protection is not guaranteed there.

By activating the notifications, users agree to agree to the terms of use in accordance with Article 49 paragraph 1 lit a) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. This means that every user always stays informed without unnecessarily putting their privacy at risk.

The internet background

In an increasingly connected world where information is just a click away, such services are worth their weight in gold. However, those interested should understand that “World Wide Web” and “Internet” are two different things. The Internet is a global network of computers, while the World Wide Web is a collection of documents and resources connected via hyperlinks. These fundamental differences, described in detail on Wikipedia, every internet user should know.

The website itself is created using HTML, a language that makes it possible to display content in a structured manner. Browsing websites has become a natural part of everyday life these days: Previously referred to as “browsing” or “web surfing”, users are now drawn to navigating through the Internet and discovering a wide variety of content.

The new notification service in Bremerhaven is a step in the right direction to make the advantages of the digital age accessible to all citizens. It remains to be hoped that many will use this opportunity to stay informed and not miss out on developments in their city.
