Ship parade inspires thousands: Sail Bremerhaven 2025 in view!
The Sail in Bremerhaven is causing a lot of activity in the port city these days. With a colorful mix of large and small ships, the maritime event attracts numerous visitors. A very special highlight is the “Alexander von Humboldt II” – like a magnet, it attracts thousands of enthusiasts to the waterfront. But it's not just big pots that are the focus. The “Gesine von Papenburg”, a traditional, smaller ship, also has a lot to offer and is accessible to everyone. There is no entry control and visitors can explore different areas on board.
On board the “Gesine” are the active members of the sponsoring association, who are happy to tell the guests their stories and experiences. Günter Röttger, a former member of the Navy, is the rock in the surf when it comes to the care and operation of the “Gesine”. But maintaining the ship is not always a walk in the park, as finding new active members is challenging. The city of Papenburg, the actual owner of the ship, provides financial support, but also benefits enormously from the maritime events in which the “Gesine” regularly takes part, such as the recent Hanse-Sail in Rostock.
A look behind the scenes
The “Gesine” is not just a ship, but a living piece of history. Maintenance work is carried out every year, which includes not only painting the mast, but also adapting to new regulations, such as raising the railing. This is not an easy job, especially when you consider that of the 100 members of the sponsoring association, only about ten actively participate in the events.
Sailors describe the Sail as very well organized and personal. It is an event where you can make new acquaintances and the sailors' stories are always listened to. The participants are always ready to share their experiences with visitors, which further enhances the maritime atmosphere.
Maritime Security and Global Impact
The current developments in Ukraine and the associated agricultural exports in particular have a massive impact on maritime security and trade flows. Food prices have increased due to market uncertainty. In addition, environmental influences due to increasing extreme weather events can put ports worldwide under pressure and cause additional economic damage.
Overall, it is clear that while the maritime festival in Bremerhaven is flourishing, the global challenges must not be lost from view. It is to be hoped that the event will continue to be a place of exchange and interest, not only for technology and ship enthusiasts, but also for those interested in future developments in the maritime world.
