World-class pianist Olafsson makes Bremerhaven shine!
Did you know that a lot is happening in Bremerhaven? On Monday, December 7, 2025, the Icelandic pianist Vikingur Olafsson published his latest work “Opus 109”. This exciting recording combines Beethoven's Piano Sonata in E major opus 109 with Bach's Partita No. 6 and Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 6. Olafsson, known for his soulful and elegant playing style, takes his listeners on a musical journey through the eras.
The album, which was released on November 21, 2025 on the Deutsche Grammophon label, is already receiving praise from critics. It not only contains the Piano Sonata Op. 109, but also Beethoven's Op. 90 and is a homage to the composers Bach and Schubert. Critics point out that Olafsson places particular emphasis on the voicing in Bach's Prelude No. 9 and his interpretation of Beethoven is characterized by a faster tempo. It is usually an art for a pianist to preserve the character of the compositions, and Olafsson succeeds in doing just that, as numerous reviews show. A digital version of the album also contains the Sarabande from Bach's 6th French Suite.
Cinema highlights in Bremerhaven
But something is not only happening in the music scene. The “Passage” cinema in Bremerhaven started showing nostalgic films on Tuesday. “The Miracle of Manhattan” will be shown today at 6 p.m. and entry is subject to a voluntary charity donation. This campaign is very popular and brings the community together - especially during Advent, when such preparations for the festive season are particularly valuable.
An exciting program is offered in Bremerhaven on weekdays. On Wednesday, for example, Arte TV will broadcast a documentary about the important philosopher Hannah Arendt. It sheds light on her life and writing in exile in Paris from 1933 to 1940 and includes unpublished images. Stories like these make you think and show the cultural diversity that our city has to offer.
Theater and opera for culture enthusiasts
Thursday invites art lovers to the Thalia Theater Hamburg, where Guy Weizman will perform his dance-theatrical play “Hope”. It's about power, rules and the tireless fight for stability - topics that couldn't be more relevant. And on Friday a classical opera awaits us in the Bremen Theater at Goetheplatz: Puccini's “La Bohème” will be performed in cooperation with the Tafel. Poverty and social justice are the focus here, which makes the evening particularly moving.
On Saturday the opera “I Capuleti e i Montecchi” by Vincenzo Bellini makes its debut at the Bremerhaven City Theater. This concert performance without direction or stage design promises a purely musical experience that should not be missed. And finally, on Sunday at 5 p.m., Bach's Cantata No. 51, another gem of classical music, will be performed in the “Big Church”.
Bremerhaven has a variety of cultural highlights to offer this week, and the announcement of Olafsson's “Opus 109” shows that the musical landscape continues to flourish. Some things may be like fine wine - the older they are, the better they are appreciated. Stop by and get inspired!
