World premiere in Bremen: Dance art between Malta and Schwankhalle!
In Bremen on October 31, 2025, the dance event “New Artefacts” caused particular excitement. This evening, Helge Letonja and his Ensemble of Curious Nature presented their first collaboration with Matthew William Robinson, director of Malta's renowned National Dance Company, ŻfinMalta. As the Dance net reports, this event will be the start of a longer cultural exchange between the two companies.
In the run-up to the debut, the final rehearsals took place to prepare everything perfectly for the premiere. The preliminary performance was offered with tickets in the solidarity price system - for 8, 12 or 18 euros - and aroused the interest of many dance lovers. Discounts were also available for holders of the Bremen Pass and Cultural Semester Tickets. In addition, attention was drawn to the accessibility of the Schwankhalle, which makes all public areas step-free accessible, while wheelchair space reservations are possible in advance.
The pieces in detail
The first piece of the evening, “Arcadia”, takes the audience into an oppressive scene. The stage shows a dancer in sportswear surrounded by other dancers who stare motionlessly at the audience. Accompanied by booming sounds, Robinson's work shows the isolation and self-reflection in private life and social media, without, however, making direct reference to it. The dancers' grand gesture remains empty and creates a distance between the performers and the audience. A dramatic break brings fresh energy, but the audience remains passive.
In contrast to this is “Black Rain”, which was choreographed by Helge Letonja. An intimate presence shines through here, while a gentle rain in the background underlines the mood. Letonja decided to challenge the dancers with less movement material and conjures up impressive images with words and light. The listener is accompanied by a digital voice in fantasy language and the rumble of a thunderstorm. Here the piece proves to be more authentic, as some dancers radiate visible joy in dancing, which is perceived positively by the audience.
Looking into the future
The event in the Schwankhalle not only marks the end of an intensive preparation phase, but is also the beginning of a fruitful exchange between Bremen and Malta. Another guest performance by ŻfinMalta in Bremen is already planned for December, followed by the premiere of a new work by Letonja in Malta before the end of the year. It remains to be seen what creative impulses will emerge from this collaboration and how the two dance companies will develop further.
Overall, it can be said that “New Artefacts” was a successful evening that touched the audience in several ways and made them think. A successful start to an exciting cultural journey between two talented ensembles.
