A7 in Hamburg: Serious truck accident leads to 12 km traffic jam!

Today, December 8th, 2025, there is several news to report in Hamburg. A serious truck accident was particularly significant, causing traffic on the A7 to be completely snarled. Loud NDR.de The emergency services drove to an accident right in front of the Schnelsener Tunnel on Monday morning around 7 a.m. A truck crashed into the rear of a dump truck without braking, with the driver becoming trapped between the seat and the steering wheel.

It took the rescue workers around an hour to free the driver. A total of around 40 firefighters and paramedics were on duty. Although the A7 has now been reopened, southbound traffic remains limited to one lane, which has led to a long traffic jam of around twelve kilometers. Another problem that delays the clearance work is oil leaks, which further complicate the work.

Traffic chaos due to construction sites

Before the accident, the A7 between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Heimfeld junctions was completely closed due to expansion work. This work is part of a comprehensive project aimed at expanding the motorway from six to eight lanes. These modernizations also include the assembly and equipment of traffic sign gantries, which are intended to increase traffic safety.

In addition, the noise protection tunnel in Altona is on the way to completion and should be completed by 2028. Many drivers in the region therefore continue to have to adapt to changing traffic conditions, especially on the A7, the A23 in Schleswig-Holstein, and the A1 and A261 in Lower Saxony, which are also affected by the construction sites.

Traffic in numbers

In view of such traffic restrictions, it is helpful to know that the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMV) has been publishing the standard work “Traffic in Numbers” for over 50 years. These comprehensive statistics, which comprise around 380 pages, provide the public with valuable information about accidents, traffic volumes and the daily mobility habits of Germans. The current edition in particular, which is available free of charge in PDF format, can be of great importance for those interested in being able to better assess the traffic situation. Detailed information about this can be found on the BMV website BMV.de.

While the situation on the motorway is increasingly stabilizing, it remains to be hoped that road users will soon be able to travel carefree again. For all those affected, it is now important to be patient and follow current developments.
