Bloody attack on the ICE: man seriously injures passengers!

On Thursday, July 3, 2025, a frightening incident occurred on an ICE train traveling from Hamburg-Altona to Vienna. A 20-year-old Syrian attacked several passengers and injured four people, including three members of a Syrian family aged 15, 24 and 51, as well as a 38-year-old German passenger. Fortunately, none of the injured are in mortal danger; they are being treated in different hospitals. The perpetrator, who was also seriously injured, was overpowered by other passengers and is now also being treated in hospital.

As neumarktaktuell.de reports, an arrest warrant was applied for against the suspect on strong suspicion of attempted murder. The Straubing Criminal Police Inspectorate secured extensive evidence at the crime scene and began the investigation. The Syrian is registered in Vienna and recognized as an asylum seeker; However, he has had dealings with the police for violent crimes in the past. There is no information about the man in Germany.

Investigations and possible motivations

Investigators consider that the attacker may have been under the influence of narcotics; a toxicology report is currently ongoing. A witness even reported that the perpetrator shouted “Allahu Akbar” during his attack, but so far there is no concrete evidence that points to an Islamist-motivated act. This information was supplemented by spiegel.de, which further sheds light on the course of the investigation.

While the relevant security authorities were on site with a large number of fire brigade, police and rescue services, the railway line was immediately closed. A collection point was set up near Straßkirchen for those affected to provide support and information.

Crime in context

This incident is part of a worrying trend in Germany, as current police crime statistics show. According to bka.de, violent crime rose by 1.5% to 217,277 cases in 2024 - the highest value since 2007. This applies not only to general crime, but also to violent crimes in which non-German suspects are increasingly involved. The number of these suspects rose by 7.5% to 85,012.

It remains to be seen how the investigation in this specific case progresses and what further information the police can gain. The investigators are still asking for the help of witnesses who may have taken photos of the crime scene or who can provide relevant information.
