Hammer attack on the ICE: Passengers stop attackers in a horror attack!
On July 3rd there was a shocking incident on the ICE 91 from Hamburg-Altona to Vienna. A 20-year-old Syrian attacked several passengers on the train, which caused a stir in the region around Straßkirchen, Straubing-Bogen district. The attacker, who had previously addressed a Syrian family, appeared confused and shouted "Allahu Akbar" during his attack before striking with a hammer and possibly a hatchet. [Epoch Times].
The situation escalated when the attacker injured a 38-year-old German. A 24-year-old man from the Syrian family mentioned above also fell victim to his violence. Luckily, the 24-year-old managed to grab the hammer from the attacker and hit back. Finally, the young Syrian was overpowered by several other travelers, including a Bundeswehr soldier, and handed over to the police. The incident resulted in four passengers being injured, while the attacker himself suffered serious injuries requiring surgery.
Injuries and reactions
A total of five people were injured in this attack; three of them suffered moderate injuries and two suffered minor injuries, including a 15-year-old from the Syrian family. Deutsche Bahn provided a care center in a gym in Straßkirchen to support affected travelers, while more than 150 rescue workers were deployed at the scene, including two helicopters. The last travelers were able to continue their journey at around 9:30 p.m. The incident caused a huge response and affected not only the passengers on the train but also the general public.
Background and investigations
The suspected attacker is registered as a refugee in Austria and has received protection status since 2022. He had already been convicted of assault and resisting law enforcement officers and is now the focus of an asylum revocation procedure that was initiated in May 2025. Before the crime, a rapid drug test showed evidence of three different narcotics in his blood. The investigators continue to assume that the perpetrator was an individual, but the background to his actions remains unclear. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann did not rule out the possibility that there could be an extremist background, but so far the authorities have found no concrete evidence of this. Tagesspiegel mentions that the relationships between attackers and victims cannot yet be fully clarified.
This incident shocked not only the region but also the whole of Germany. Security forces speak of a “worrying event” and the debate about safety on public transport is reignited. While Deutsche Bahn has expressed its sympathy for those affected, it remains to be seen what measures will now be taken to increase security on the trains and how the attacker's case will be handled legally. Spiegel reports on the overpowering of the attacker by the brave travelers and sheds light on courage and the speed with which the situation was brought under control.
