Today an incident at Hamburg-Altona train station caused a stir. A 41-year-old man was arrested after attempting to enter a supermarket despite being banned from entering the supermarket. When he was checked by the federal police, it finally came to light that there was an arrest warrant against him for bodily harm. The allegations relate to an incident that occurred at the Altona bus station at the beginning of the year, in which he seriously injured another man. The Hamburg district court had issued the arrest warrant due to an existing risk of escape.
Serious allegations against another man
Just a few weeks earlier, on July 30, 2025, another man was arrested at the same train station. The 36-year-old had five arrest warrants, including ones for bodily harm and illegal car racing. How Radio Hamburg reported that the man did not have a valid ticket during a check on an S-Bahn and refused to provide his personal details. After his identity could not be established, he was taken to the police station.
The warrant for assault had been active since May 2022, and the man had previously served a year in prison. He was also charged with further allegations, including fraud and driving without a license, which resulted in two further arrest warrants. In total, his fine amounted to 3,600 euros, which was briefly paid by his mother.
Security situation in Hamburg
These recent incidents shed light on the overall security situation in Hamburg, which according to the Hamburg police although generally declining. The number of crimes fell by 4 percent in 2024, but there was still an increase in specific crimes, especially in the area of violent crime. This rose by 7 percent, with most cases recorded in districts such as St. Pauli and St. Georg.
Despite positive developments in other areas, such as the decline in murder and manslaughter crimes and an improved clearance rate, the police remain wide awake. Measures must continue to be taken to ensure safety at train stations and busy places.
