Viking exhibition in Hamburg: Experience female power and VR adventures!
The spectacular exhibition “VIKINGS – Discoverers and Conquerors” opens in Hamburg-Altona on Wednesday. This immersive show, which takes visitors into a time full of adventure and myths, impressively focuses on the fascinating 300-year history of the Vikings. A real treat for all history lovers and those interested, as the exhibition uses the latest technology to make the ancient Nordic culture all the more lively. Loud Day24 Interactive storytelling, virtual reality and even AI are used.
The focus of the exhibition is the figure Kraka, who not only acts as a powerful queen, but also as a child-like visitor guide. This AI-generated projection will be featured multiple times in the exhibition, offering guests the opportunity to communicate with it. Curator Mitch Sebastian, a Brit with a keen sense of immersive experiences, has condensed 300 years of Nordic history into the figure of Kraka. “It is the key to the entire exhibition,” said the curator. The role of the Kraka also shows that women in the Viking Age often held powerful positions while men went to sea, reports Time.
Unique experiences for visitors
The exhibition offers visitors numerous exciting opportunities to experience the world of the Vikings up close. A particularly impressive element is the reconstructed nave, which not only serves as a seating area, but also as a projection surface for the main show. In addition, up to 40 people can experience the saga of Ragnar, Aslaug and their sons at the same time in a 360-degree film. “A walk-in Viking longship that also serves as a projection surface is really unique,” says Sebastian enthusiastically.
After an impressive virtual reality journey through the beginnings of the Vikings, ending in the cloud chamber, the path leads through an experience that symbolizes the haze on the way to the harbor. Professor Rudolf Simek, who provides scientific support for the exhibition, underlines the balance between fantasy and facts that has been achieved here. “We show the Vikings not only as warriors, but also as traders and cultural workers,” he adds. The echo chamber, which represents the legacy of the Vikings, provides, among other things, the connection to modern DNA.
From Hamburg into the world
After the premiere in Hamburg, the exhibition will stop at various locations in Germany. The immersive design and the combination of history and modern technology make this show a real experience that takes young and old together into the fascinating world of the Vikings. The idea of looking at European identity through the lens of Viking DNA gives the exhibition a contemporary feel, making it one of the most exciting ventures of the year.
Whether through experiencing VR technology or immersing yourself in multimedia narratives, VIKINGS - Explorers and Conquerors promises to not only impart knowledge, but also create a deep sense of life and the challenges of the Viking Age - a real invitation for everyone to embark on an adventure and discover the heritage of this fascinating culture.
