Rail chaos ended: trains between Hamburg and Lübeck are running again!
A special kind of commuter chaos has kept rail traffic between Hamburg and Lübeck in suspense in the past few days. A technical defect in the track system meant that all trains between Hamburg main station and Rahlstedt were canceled from Tuesday afternoon. This was done by the North German Rundschau reported.
The problems were discovered due to a “track fault” that was discovered during routine work. Railway employees repaired the tracks in the Hamburg-Wandsbek area overnight, which finally led to normalization of traffic on Wednesday afternoon. However, travelers continued to face short-term delays as trains were still canceled in some areas, such as MOPO reported.
Replacement traffic and challenges
The situation for commuters was tense. Hundreds of travelers waited in vain for buses that were used to replace the canceled trains. Four bus companies had been commissioned, but the rush was so high that there were considerable delays. Many commuters had to reckon with up to 60 minutes of additional travel time.
The regulation for regional trains received particular attention: While the trains on the RE80 line were completely canceled, the RE8 commuted again, but without stopping in Ahrensburg in the Stormarn district. Buses were used on the route between Ahrensburg and Hamburg Central Station to offer travelers an alternative. In addition, the RE81 only ran between Bad Oldesloe and Hamburg-Rahlstedt.
Long-term effects
The chaos not only had an impact on regional trains, but also affected long-distance traffic. Trains on the ICE line between Lübeck and Munich and the IC between the Ostseebad Binz and Hamburg were also affected. Commuters and travelers were advised to check the railway website before departure in order to be prepared for possible timetable deviations.
The railway has now emphasized that all problems have been resolved, but it remains to be seen how the situation will affect the timetables for the coming days. Public transport users are asked to continue to be vigilant and pay attention to the latest information before traveling.
