Digital residence registration: Re-register faster and save in Hamburg!
Around eight million moves take place in Germany every year - an impressive number that shows how often we change our four walls. It is all the more important that the process of registering your place of residence has now become much easier and faster. Hamburg relies on digitalization and has developed an online service for electronic residence registration that works according to the “one for all” principle. This means that not only Hamburg residents, but also over 55 million German citizens can use the service as of this week. [Hamburg040] reports that more than 2,000 registration authorities nationwide are now connected.
But what does that mean specifically? After changing residence, citizens in Germany have two weeks to re-register. With the new digital solution, you no longer have to go to an authority in person. Dr. Karsten Wildberger, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and State Modernization, praises the cooperation between the federal government and the city of Hamburg and emphasizes the importance of digital administration: “The user-friendliness and automation of the process are significant advances,” says Christian Pfromm, Chief Digital Officer Hamburg.
Digital advantages and mobility for movers
The electronic residence registration (eWA) allows you to update address data as well as request registration confirmations and adjust the data in your ID card and passport completely online and even free of charge. To use the service, however, the online ID function of the ID card or eID card is required. This must be activated once. Marie-Dominique Enjalbert, project manager at eWA, emphasizes that this not only saves time but also costs.
An additional offer that the city provides in cooperation with the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (hvv) and the “Frisch Moved” campaign is a voucher for a free weekly pass on the hvv entire network worth 38 euros or a 10 euro voucher for the hvv switch app. That sounds tempting, right? Anyone who has moved within Hamburg in the last three months can claim this voucher code upon presentation of the registration confirmation. The opportunity to win car sharing vouchers worth 100 euros each by the end of the year also makes the effort of moving a little easier.
Clearly on course for digital
With the introduction of these services, Hamburg shows that the city wants to drive digital change. Dr. Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition, underlines how important this progress is for citizens. The “Hamburg digital for you” marketing campaign also uses various platforms to draw attention to this – be it through posters, campaigns or social media.
So-called digital guides are available to support citizens in using these digital administrative services. These help on site with questions about digital administration and facilitate access to administrative services. Hamburg is taking an interesting approach to not only make the move easier from a bureaucratic point of view, but also to promote mobility in the city.
