Hamburg reaches for the Olympics: referendum planned for 2026!

The Olympic Games are a topic that is currently very popular in Germany, especially in Hamburg. With an impressive vote of 66.4%, the people of Munich voted in favor of applying for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. [Welt] reports that Steffen Rülke, the head of Hamburg's application, sees this positive trend as a tailwind for the Hanseatic city. Rülke emphasizes that the majority of the population supports supporting the Olympic Games in Germany.

Hamburg is now looking optimistically towards an upcoming referendum on May 31, 2026, which could be decisive for the bid for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Summer Games. By 2026 at the latest, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) will decide which applicant will be awarded the contract for the international betting process. While the city of Berlin is forgoing a referendum, the Rhine-Ruhr region is also planning to hold a vote on its own application in spring 2026. It becomes clear here that the competition is fierce - and the pressure on Hamburg is increasing.

A step into the future

The success of Hamburg's application depends not only on the consent of the citizens, but also on the active participation of the citizens themselves. Rülke and his team have already started offering participation events in seven districts. The first of these events took place at HafenCity University, where around 500 people came together to contribute their ideas and suggestions. These suggestions range from the creation of a volunteer platform to ticket quotas for schools, accessibility and public viewing offers.

The city wants the voices of the population to be incorporated into the application concept. To ensure this, a digital participation format is also provided. This means that everyone interested has the opportunity to get involved and express their ideas clearly.

Olympics as cultural heritage

The fascination for the Olympic Games, whether in Hamburg or at their historical place of origin in Olympia, connects people across borders. With the return of these games, Hamburg could provide not only sporting but also cultural impulses that extend far beyond the city limits. The sporting competitions in the fascinating northern backdrop promise a unique experience for athletes and spectators alike.
