Hamburg's housing offensive: 3,000 new places for trainees by 2030!

In Hamburg, the issue of housing for trainees is a hot topic! The SPD and the Greens have submitted a joint proposal to create new dormitory places. The plans aim to create a total of 3,000 new places in trainee dormitories by 2030. The need is enormous, because there are currently around 33,000 trainees in the Hanseatic city, but there are only around 5,500 dormitory places available NDR reported.

The strategy is intended not only to improve the living situation, but also to counteract the growing shortage of skilled workers. A new location in Große Freiheit in St. Pauli is already being planned and will offer space for up to 150 trainees. The specially designed dormitories offer both individual apartments and shared apartments, which are operated by the real estate subsidiary of Hamburger Hochbahn. Innovative concepts such as “BildungshausPlus”, which would combine living and education in one place, are also being considered Development city firmly.

The current situation and planned measures

The current housing situation for young people in training occupations is very challenging due to the tense situation on the housing market in large cities. As the DIHK reported, trainees with low incomes are particularly affected. Companies are therefore required to do more to actively help their apprentices find accommodation. This is not only in the interest of the trainees, but also an opportunity for the companies, which can strengthen the bond with their employees.

By 2028, the Hafenbahnpark in Wilhelmsburg will also be home to around 385 new apartments, including 200 for students and trainees. These projects not only include housing, but also community facilities such as daycare centers and food markets. The city has announced appropriate measures, ranging from funding and advice to support in finding space.

Support and responsibility in focus

Public companies, chambers and the housing industry are called upon to take responsibility. According to the current figures, around 5.2% of companies support their employees with company-owned living space. A further 11.6% offer help in finding accommodation through cooperations. The surveys show that a significant number of young people, 44%, are willing to move cities if they can get cheaper rent. The city of Hamburg is reacting to these developments and strengthening its initiatives in order to be considered an attractive training location.

The debates on how to proceed will be broadcast publicly on the Internet; the next meeting of the Hamburg Citizens' Council begins today, September 10th, at 1:30 p.m. The focus here is on the decision on the application, which could sustainably improve the living conditions for many young people in Hamburg.
