Hamburg beach duo fights for bronze after World Cup disappointment!
The great hopes of Hamburg beach volleyball players Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler for a final at the World Cup in Adelaide have suddenly shattered. Last Saturday the two had to admit defeat to the Swedish duo David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig in the semi-finals. At 0:2 (10:21, 14:21), the defeat was bitter for Ehlers and Wickler, who had already experienced the same defeat in the Olympic final in Paris. "It was like magic. We have now lost 14 times in 15 international matches against the Swedes," said Ehlers, who clearly shows the disappointment at the lost opportunity.[Mopo]
But the Hamburg team is not giving up yet and is aiming for the bronze medal game. On Sunday at 5:30 a.m. CET they will face Frenchmen Arnaud Gauthier-Rat and Téo Rotar. “We are still in the tournament and want to give everything,” explained Ehlers with a fighting spirit. The two men also showed their skills on the way to the semi-finals: They eliminated strong opponents such as the world number one Anders Mol and Christian Sörum from Norway (2:1) and the Czech defending champions Ondrej Perusic and David Pigner (2:0).[ZDF]
The path to the medal
The last German beach volleyball medals at world championships were some time ago. The last one was achieved in 2019 by Wickler and Julius Thole, who secured the silver medal. The pressure on Ehlers and Wickler is therefore doubly high: They must not miss the chance of winning a medal when they play against the French in Sunday's game. And the will to give everything in this important match is palpable. “We are hungry, we want to go to Center Court and cheer on everyone there!” says Wickler confidently.[Mopo]
Meanwhile, the Swedes Ahman and Hellvig will be in the final, fighting for the title against their compatriots Elmer Andersson and Jacob Hölting Nilsson. With numerous successes in the world of beach volleyball since the sport was added to the Olympic program in 1992, expectations are particularly high this year. A look at the list of Olympic winners shows how strong the sport has become and why medals are so important.[Wikipedia]
On Sunday morning we will know more whether Ehlers and Wickler can make it onto the podium. It remains exciting - are we ready to bet on the duo, who are currently showing a fighting spirit that inspires us all? Cheers to beach volleyball!
