Hate attack at the CSD: Police are looking for homophobic perpetrators!

The Hamburg police have expanded the search for a suspect in an attack during Christopher Street Day (CSD) 2024. On August 4, 2024, around 3 a.m., a 23-year-old man was the victim of a homophobic attack in the St. Pauli district. As t-online.de reports, the young man had arranged to meet a perpetrator via a dating portal and was lured to a meeting on Simon-von-Utrecht-Straße.

The suspect led the victim into a driveway where other accomplices were already waiting for him. When the 23-year-old recognized the threatening situation and tried to escape, the group caught up with him and attacked him. During the attack he suffered injuries to his head and upper body, but was eventually able to break away while his attackers fled.

Investigations are in full swing

Although the investigations by the State Criminal Police Office have not yet led to the identification of the perpetrators after two months, the police assume a homophobic motive. A statement emphasizes that the state security agency is actively working on the case to collect further information. The incident fits into a worrying trend: the number of anti-queer crimes has been increasing for years. This is also confirmed by an investigation by the BKA, according to which a total of 17,007 cases of hate crime were registered in 2023, including 1,785 that were specifically directed against LGBTIQ*.

It is striking that the most common crimes against the LGBTQ+ community are insults and acts of violence. This development is not only concerning, but also shows how important a quick and effective response from the authorities is. The CSD should be a symbol of equality and tolerance, but instead it becomes a scene of violence and discrimination.

Looking for witnesses

In order to clarify the perpetrator, the police published a mugshot taken from the suspect's profile on the dating portal. Witnesses who recognize the man pictured or his accomplices are asked to call 040/4286-56789 or contact any police station. The Hamburger Morgenpost also reports on the incident, which points out the urgency of the search.

The situation in Germany is serious and awareness of homophobic attacks must be raised. According to the latest data, the number of crimes against sexual orientation and gender diversity has increased almost tenfold since 2010. It is all the more important that incidents like this are not forgotten and that the voices of the victims are heard.
