VfL Wolfsburg signs Paul Simonis: New era begins!
Today, June 19, 2025, it is official: VfL Wolfsburg has chosen Paul Simonis as its new head coach, and the anticipation is great. The 40-year-old Dutchman comes from the Go Ahead Eagles, where he led the team to a memorable cup victory with great skill and passion. At the presentation in July, Simonis will start his new dream job and build the coaching team with well-known support.
Simonis, who has signed a contract until June 30, 2027, will inherit Ralph Hasenhüttl. He was fired two match days before the end of the last Bundesliga season and the pressure on the new coach is therefore high. Peter Christiansen, Wolfsburg's sports director, emphasizes that Simonis fits the requirements profile perfectly and that he impresses with his detailed way of working. “We are convinced that he brings a lot of energy and passion to the team,” said Christiansen.
A successful start to the German League
With an impressive track record in the Dutch Eredivisie, Simonis brings a wealth of experience with him. Last season he led the Go Ahead Eagles to a cup victory on penalties against AZ Alkmaar, securing the club's first title in 92 years. Before taking over the management of the Eagles, Simonis worked as an assistant coach at various clubs and spent 15 years in youth training at Sparta Rotterdam.
The coaching team around Simonis is completed by the experienced goalkeeping coach Pascal Formann as well as Tristan Berghuis, Peter van der Veen and Martin Darneviel. Teamwork and cohesion are central aspects that Simonis has always emphasized throughout his time. “The discussions with those responsible at VfL were very positive and I am looking forward to the challenge in the Bundesliga,” says the new coach optimistically.
Squad planning and transfer focus
The Wolves also have their eye on interesting talents in the transfer market. Maurits Kjaergaard from RB Salzburg is currently in particular focus. The 21-year-old Dane, who is currently playing in the Club World Cup, is seen as an ideal newcomer. His contract with Salzburg runs until 2028, and with a market value of around ten million euros, he could represent a lucrative investment for Wolfsburg, as stpauli24.mopo.de reports.
The coming season promises to be exciting, not only for the fans of VfL Wolfsburg, but also for everyone interested in football in Germany. The course has been set, and with Paul Simonis at the helm, the team could soon find its way back to its former strength. It remains to be seen how the plans regarding the squad will develop and which players will feel comfortable under Simonis' leadership.
