Triathlon World Championships in Hamburg: German team fights for the third gold!
The vibrant Hanseatic city of Hamburg has an exciting event to offer today: the World Triathlon Championship Series, which will take place from July 12th to 13th, 2025. As part of these championships, the mixed relay for gold takes place, in which the German team is aiming for its third title in a row. On board are the top athletes Lisa Tertsch, Tanja Neubert, Henry Graf and Lasse Nygaard Priest. This event not only attracts sports enthusiasts, but also has a noticeable impact on city traffic.
The competition route leads through the picturesque backdrop of the Alster and Hamburg city center, with a finish at the impressive Rathausmarkt. The commitment of the athletes should not be underestimated: The distances are 300 meters of swimming, followed by 7 kilometers of cycling and finally 1.75 kilometers of running. The German team is relying on the experience and strength of its members to win the title again. However, Henry Graf had a crash in today's competition and finished fifth, while the German women clearly missed the podium.
Strong performance despite setbacks
Lisa Tertsch and Lasse Lührs are considered key athletes on the German mixed relay team. Tertsch revived her season with a win at the WTCS race in Abu Dhabi and a World Cup victory in Tiszaujvaros, placing her at the top of the World Championship standings. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, she won the gold medal with her team after finishing ninth in the individual event. Lührs, on the other hand, had surgery on his heel and was out of action for several months. Hamburg is his first WTCS race of the season after his forced break saw him fall to 182nd in the world rankings. However, he views this break positively and sees it as his first real vacation in 14 years.
Tanja Neubert is also one of the top 10 women in the world rankings, which further strengthens the team. Together with Graf, they prepared for the challenge, which requires not only physical strength but also team spirit. While the athletes give their all during training and competition, it is important to warn residents and visitors about the road closures that are taking place. The police recommend that you avoid the city center as much as possible to avoid unnecessary traffic jams.
A look at the history of the competition
The mixed relay in triathlon has a long history and was first held in Des Moines, Iowa in 2009. Hamburg has regularly hosted these World Championships since 2013, with the exception of Montreal in 2022. The Mixed Relay made its debut at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, and Germany now goes into today's competition as reigning world champions.
This year, the German team's recipe for success is the result of hard work and regular competition presence. Frequent participation in major sporting events has enabled athletes to optimally prepare for the challenges of the mixed relay. At the last Olympics, Team Germany managed to once again assert itself as strong competition.
