Since May 10, 2025, he has been working as a mini-job for the Hamburg-Holstein transport company (VHH) as a bus driver. What's special about Schmidt: His main job is as a dentist in Bahrenfeld, and driving the bus is not just a job for him, but living out a childhood dream. “I always wanted to be a bus driver,” he admits.
His fascination with buses began as a child, when he turned his living room into a bus and played with stuffed animals as passengers. After graduating from high school, he decided to pursue dentistry, fulfilled his dream of driving a bus in 2024 and registered at a driving school in June 2024 to privately acquire a bus driver's license (class D). Now he can go out on Fridays and weekends and hit the streets of Hamburg. His wage is 23.26 euros per hour, and the maximum working hours in the mini-job are 22.74 hours per month.
A wonderful evening on the bus
His family was present on his maiden voyage on line 189 - they boarded at every stop and created a warm atmosphere. “That gave me a very positive feeling,” remembers Schmidt. The passengers respond warmly to his greetings, and it is not uncommon for some of his former patients to ask him if he is giving up his dental practice. However, Schmidt can reassure: “The dental practice will remain.”
