Crab rush in Büsum: vacationers wait in line at the cutter!
In Büsum, a picturesque coastal town on the North Sea, the current weather is having a clear impact on the behavior of locals and tourists. While some people prefer to avoid the house, others head to the beach to enjoy the fresh sea air. And what would a stay in Büsum be without the famous North Sea crabs?
The Shrimp boat Andrea has established itself as a real insider tip. The demand for the fresh crabs is so high that on one of the last sales days there was a long queue in front of the sales stand. The cutter's crew proudly shared a picture of this rush on Facebook and thanked the guests - although some disappointed holidaymakers had to go home without crabs because the goods were completely sold out on the same day. A new attempt to get hold of the delicacy is scheduled for Thursday, October 9th. The exact sales times have not yet been determined, which only increases the anticipation for the next event.
Mood of crisis on the North Sea coast
However, a look at the numbers shows that not everything is rosy in the North Sea. In the current one North Sea Tourism Report, which was published at the end of the last high season, the gloomy forecasts for 2025 can be found. Holiday resorts on the German North Sea coast recorded a decline in visitor numbers of 11.6% in 2024 compared to the previous year. According to the frightening predictions, things could get even worse - the estimate for 2025 speaks of a possible decline of 12.5%.
Nevertheless, the loyalty of tourists remains remarkable. Two thirds of those surveyed said they had traveled to the North Sea several times. However, the region's attractiveness could suffer greatly: around 25% plan to visit the North Sea by 2026, which means a decline of 5% since 2023. Similar trends can also be seen on the Baltic Sea and in the neighboring countries of Denmark and the Netherlands.
Challenges in tourism
Another pressing point is the shortage of skilled workers in the industry. According to the report, 53% of respondents described this as noticeable, an increase of 13% compared to last year. Accessibility also plays a major role: 34% of vacationers attach great importance to it, while 54% rely heavily on good Internet reviews or online recommendations.
Despite these challenges, many visitors to the North Sea particularly value the closeness to nature, safety and the numerous leisure opportunities. Despite all the odds, Büsum remains a popular destination for those looking for fresh crab and picturesque coastal scenery.
This makes it clear: Even if the numbers currently do not indicate an unbridled travel boom, the fresh crabs are from Shrimp boat Andrea a small ray of hope on the way back to normality. After all, food intake could also play a small part in the tourism revival – if the weather cooperates.
