Last wish by the sea: Gertrud experiences an emotional farewell in Cuxhaven

Cuxhaven, a place full of memories and longings, is always a destination for those who love the sea. This also applies to Gertrud, who at the age of 85 has her last wish fulfilled and is allowed to visit the North Sea again. The “wish wagon” from the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) takes them to the coast, accompanied by their helpers Angela and Melli. When she arrives, you can feel the great longing in the air, but at the same time a bittersweet atmosphere hovers over the visit: It is clear that this will be Gertrud's last farewell to the beloved North Sea.

Tears flow from her family members – her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. Nevertheless, they decide to experience this special day to the fullest. The first stop: the promenade and the beach, where Angela draws water from the North Sea and carefully places it on Gertrud's hands. There is a lot of love and memories of days gone by on the coast in these small gestures.

A day full of simple joys

The group enjoys the uncomplicated pleasures of life. There is carrot soup to strengthen you and then ice cream - a delicacy that cannot be missed. But the most emotional gift is an engraved “love lock” that is presented as a surprise for Gertrud. The emotion is written all over her face when she is allowed to hug the “Wünschewagen” crew. As a symbolic farewell, she fastens the lock and throws the key into the sea - a moving moment that is deeply touching.

Gertrud's story is not the only one that shows how the wishing carriage makes dreams come true. Ulla from the Hanover region also had a fervent wish to see the sea in Cuxhaven one last time. Seriously ill with cancer, the wish car fulfills her last wish. On April 24th she is picked up by the dedicated wish fulfillers Christian and Martina. Together with her son and her best friend and their family, Ulla is planning a visit to “Alte Liebe” to gaze out over the water and take in nature.

Creating shared memories

The group takes a ride on the beach tram and enjoys a walk along the beach promenade. Ulla has a very special menu in mind: Finkenwerder style plaice fillet – a culinary farewell that rounds off the day perfectly. Back in the Hanover region, they not only take with them the taste of the sea, but above all the beautiful memories of an unforgettable day.

The Wish Car not only fulfills last wishes, but also creates valuable memories and allows the love of life to live on in the hearts of those involved. Both Gertrud and Ulla's stories make it clear how important such moments are and that they are worth experiencing - no matter how challenging the circumstances may be.
