250 historical treasures in MV: Discover the Open Monument Day!
On September 14, 2025, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will be the venue for the popular “Open Monument Day”. Over 250 historical buildings open their doors and invite visitors to take a look behind the scenes of regional history. Organized annually by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, this day of action aims to raise awareness of the value of historic buildings. This year the motto of the event is: “Valuable: priceless or irreplaceable?” NDR reports that the diverse offerings extend to churches, castles and various historic residential buildings and facilities.
Schwerin Castle is a special hotspot as a UNESCO plaque will be unveiled there at 11 a.m. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the inner courtyard, the magnificent castle church and the idyllic castle garden. But Schwerin Castle is not the only highlight that awaits visitors. In Kühlungsborn, those interested can visit the GDR border watchtower, discover the old train station signal box in Teterow or admire the impressive steam engine in the Barth commercial harbor. These unusual places bring history to life and offer exciting insights into our country's past.
A versatile program
The city tours are also worth a visit. Special city tours are planned, for example, in the Evershagen prefabricated housing area and along the water feature in Rostock. In Wismar, the Zwilling-Scholl-Gymnasium will be open with interesting tours and student exhibitions. Trechow Castle also offers guided tours of restored illusion paintings by Italian masters. In Rostock, people can visit the documentation and memorial site of the former Stasi prison from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The historical mills and sites such as the Backhausmühle on the grounds of the Bad Doberan monastery, the crypt of the princes in Putbus on Rügen and the Galerie-Holländer windmill in Kröpelin also deserve special mention. The diverse offering not only reflects the cultural diversity of the region, but also provides a deep insight into the stories behind the buildings.
Opening and the Ferdinand Lisch Monument Prize
The official opening of Monument Day will take place on the castle grounds in Penkun, which will be attended by Culture Minister Bettina Martin and other high-ranking representatives of monument preservation. The Ferdinand Lisch Monument Prize, worth 4,000 euros, is also awarded there. This prize money honors outstanding achievements in monument preservation and underlines the importance of preserving contemporary historical sites.
