Bundeswehr muster returns: Young men between hope and duty!
There is intensive discussion in Anklam about the return to muster training, which is scheduled to come into force on January 1, 2026. The Bundeswehr currently has concrete plans to recruit young men in the region, as 40 recruits from the 413 Jäger Battalion recently took their oaths at the market square in Ueckermünde. How Northern Courier reported, the political course is set for reunification of available resources for military service.
From 2026, the muster will be compulsory for young men. Coalition parties such as the CDU/CSU and SPD have agreed on a new draft that contains clear guidelines for future recruitment. The screening, which includes medical, sports and psychological tests, is due to be carried out by 2027 for everyone born in 2008, with the young men required to fill out a questionnaire. Women can take part voluntarily, as the Bayerische Rundschau mentions: BR.
Restructuring of the muster centers
Interestingly, the muster system in Germany was streamlined in 2011 when the district military replacement offices were abolished. The Ministry of Defense is now planning to set up new training centers in order to adequately look after the large number of new recruits. This is urgently needed because the Bundeswehr aims to reach a total of 460,000 soldiers by 2035. The current strength is around 182,000, significantly too few for the target numbers set according to NATO guidelines, as Deutsche Welle also states: DW.
As part of the interim solution, around 20,000 volunteers are planned to be recruited in the first year. This requires a proper increase in trainers and accommodation to adequately accommodate and train the new recruits. A look at Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shows that there are 14,704 people in the region who were born in 2008, including 7,550 men. A particularly large number live in the Mecklenburg Lake District.
Prejudices and social discussions
The revival of mustering also raises interesting social questions. Terms such as “egg control grip” (testicular examination) will be an issue again and will only be carried out by appropriately qualified specialist personnel. While Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) is pushing for the new military service to be more attractive and better paid, voices from the opposition and interested circles are opposing this return to military service. Critics of the younger generation are calling for a comprehensive education offensive to address the challenges, while left-wing politicians like Jan van Aken are even promising a guide to avoiding military service.
The Basic Law secures the right to conscientious objection to war, and this could become even more important as military service is restructured. Those responsible for politics are called upon to approach these sensitive issues with sensitivity, because for many young people, dealing with the new obligation will be a formative experience.
