Friedenstrasse in Tutow: Renovation brings old secrets to light!

The municipality of Tutow is tackling an urgent problem: the renovation of Friedenstrasse, the main access road from the B110 to the center, is on the agenda. As the SVZ reports, the Committee for Community Development, Construction, Transport and Housing unanimously voted in favor of this project. The condition of urban transport routes has been a cause for concern for years, not least because they are based on concrete tracks that were built in the 1930s during the construction of a new military airfield for the German Air Force.

After World War II, the Soviet Union expanded the settlement. In the 1980s, a new military and residential complex was built, which became the property of the municipality after the withdrawal of Russian troops in 1994. The continued deterioration of this infrastructure is alarming: many roads are now in poor condition and the old concrete parts are resurfacing.

An important construction project

The first sign of change came in July 2023, when asphalting began on the completely renovated B110 in the town of Tutow. The construction acceptance of the B110 recently took place. Originally, the renovation of Friedenstrasse was supposed to take place shortly after this renovation, but the municipality wanted to wait until the alternative traffic first arrived. This decision is now becoming increasingly relevant as an increase in traffic in Tutow is expected between autumn 2024 and summer 2025.

Initial planning approaches for Friedenstrasse have already been discussed, including ideas for traffic calming. The committee favored an expansion with plant islands in order to increase the urban warmth. This would be a step in the right direction to reduce air and noise levels while increasing the quality of life for residents.

Traffic planning in detail

The construction length is approximately 677 meters and construction work is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 23, 2024. Several construction phases are planned, with the complete closure of the through-town route planned for at least the end of 2024. The federal government is covering the main costs of around 5.65 million euros, while the municipality is proportionally liable for the intersection expansion. The engineering firm Thiele und Partner will take over the planning and construction supervision, and the ARGE GP Papenburg/EUROVIA will be responsible for the execution.

Residents can be reassured as a diversion concept for local and bus traffic as well as emergency services is guaranteed. Large-scale diversions for through and truck traffic will be set up via Burow (L 35 & L 271) and Demmin (B 110).

It remains to be hoped that the upcoming projects will bring the infrastructure in Tutow back into shape. As in the nationwide context, where countless infrastructure projects are stalled due to delays and regulations, any opportunity to accelerate construction projects is warmly welcomed - after all, Tutow's future is in the hands of its citizens.
