Jarmen: Anniversary of the city entrance - water feature should be bubbling next week!
In Jarmen, the coming year will be celebrated with a special occasion: 2026 will mark the tenth anniversary of the redesign of the eastern access to the city. The focus on the triangle between Treptower Straße and Schwarzer Weg has proven to be a real stroke of luck. Once known as a neglected corner, this area has now developed into a real flagship and focal point of the city.
The centerpiece of this remodel is an impressive water feature that features a 1-meter granite ball. This massive ball, which weighs a whopping 1.6 tons, rotates on a stone fountain base and creates a fascinating aquaplaning effect. Unfortunately, the water feature is currently out of operation, which disappoints many visitors. The reasons for the standstill are varied: There was an unexpected loss of water in the closed circulation system, which can be traced back to leaks in the basin. Fortunately, repair work is already in full swing to get the water feature up and running again as soon as possible, city officials report. A new border is designed to minimize water losses and commissioning is scheduled for next week.
A landmark of the city
Another highlight in Jarmen is the impressive carved wooden beaver, which sits on the side of the road as the town's mascot. At 1.70 meters high, it is the largest sculpture of its kind in Western Pomerania and attracts the attention of many passers-by.
Only recently has the topic of water been taken up again in urban design. Where water fountains make summer more bearable, city planners have recognized how important water is for the urban climate. In cities like Lübeck, it is not uncommon for residents to visit the cool fountains on hot days. This is particularly relevant as climate change increasingly confronts cities with higher temperatures, which are exacerbated by impervious surfaces and the associated heat island effect.
Rising temperatures mean that city planners need to get creative. As in many other cities, water cooling measures and the promotion of green spaces are essential to ensure a high quality of life for residents. Dynamic water elements, like those desired in Jarmen, can make a significant contribution to improving the microclimate by providing fresh air and lowering the ambient temperature, explains a city engineer.
Welcoming environment for visitors
The entire area where the water feature and the wooden beaver can be found is located at Motoballplatz, Demminer Straße 68. Parking is available for guests arriving by car, but a ticket is required to use the parking lot. If you don't have a ticket, you will have to use the local parking spaces. Access is only via federal highway 110, where instructions are also given by the parking crew.
For camping guests, arrival is possible from Thursday at 12 p.m. Upon arrival, visitors receive a card for access to the camping areas, which is collected again upon arrival. Disabled guests will also find special parking spaces near the entrance. In order to ensure that there is always enough space for rescue routes, trips to the camping areas may only be made once after arrival, which also applies to mobile homes.
Overall, Jarmen has a lot to offer – both for its citizens and for visitors. The redesign of the city has significantly changed the face of Jarmen and, especially in the hot summer months, provides a refreshing ambience and a quality of life that no city would want to be without.
