Children light up the streets of Anklam – a magical St. Martin’s Sunday!

The crazy time began in Anklam on November 11th, which was celebrated by the residents with numerous St. Martin's Day parades. The day is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, to whom the tradition of lantern parades owes its origin. **Nordkurier** reports that kindergartens in particular play a central role here.

The Kita am Bock organized a lively generation day, where the little ones were not only able to design their own lanterns, but also took part in a colorful lantern parade with puppet shows, games, crafts and face painting. A special highlight was a courtyard concert by a brass band, which added to the happy atmosphere with a campfire, stick cake and bratwurst.

Celebrations of the city and the schools

A lantern parade also took place in the Stadtwald daycare center, supported by the Friedland fanfare “Frederike Krüger”. The children imitated the custom of bathing the streets in warm light with their lanterns. In the daycare yard there was a fire bowl, social gatherings and lots of bratwursts as well as hot drinks to warm up.

This morning, students from the Anklam Kleeblattschule took part in a lantern parade. After a walk through the city center during which songs were sung, the children were treated to squirrels and punch. The event ended with a large parade organized by the Protestant and Catholic parishes. This led from St. Mary's Church through the city park to the Church of Saint Salvator.

A celebratory conclusion

In St. Mary's Church, the story of St. Martin was told through impressive lantern images. The evening ended with an atmospheric atmosphere at the Salvatorkirche: fire bowls, punch and the popular St. Martin's croissants ensured that young and old could enjoy the feeling of community.

The tradition of the St. Martin's Day parade is an important part of social life in Anklam and is kept alive not only by the daycare centers and schools, but also by the committed church communities. This not only keeps the memory of St. Martin alive, but also strengthens the community.
