Western Pomerania-Greifswald is switching to new speed camera technology – this is how drivers react!
There are important changes in the area of speed controls in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The district council decided on Monday to replace the outdated speed cameras with modern technology. The existing systems are not only getting old, but are also powerless without spare parts, maintenance and repairs. This represents a serious problem for traffic safety. A total of twelve measuring systems are to be brought up to date, with 1.85 million euros already earmarked in the budget for this replacement. Nevertheless, some of these funds could initially be on hold, as they could only be available in the 2026/27 double budget.
1.18 million euros were budgeted for 2025, which would only enable the replacement of nine systems. In order to quickly get to grips with the upcoming exchange, the district council has approved an over-plan expenditure of 316,400 euros for 2025 and the work is already underway: A corresponding contract has been advertised and a contractor has been found whose contract deadline is August 15, 2025.
Security and revenue in focus
The income from speeding violations represents a significant source of income for the district. In 2023, an amount of 4.626 million euros was achieved, while in 2024 the income fell to 4.127 million euros. Especially in the summer months, when many travelers use the well-developed roads in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, speed controls become increasingly important. The region is known for its motorways and country roads and plays a frequent role as a route to Baltic Sea destinations.
According to a district spokesman, safety on the roads has the highest priority. The locations of the new measuring points will be checked by a committee of experts, the Accident Commission. In this context, among other things, a new measuring system is planned in Heilgeisthof near Greifswald.
Speed cameras in numbers
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, both mobile and stationary speed cameras are used to document speeding and other traffic violations. This includes:
- Geschwindigkeitsüberschreitungen
- Abstandsunterschreitungen
- Rotlichtverstöße
It is important to know that the driver must be clearly visible in the speed camera photo in order to issue a fine. Anyone who does not adhere to the speed limits must expect severe penalties, which can range from fines to points in Flensburg and possibly even driving bans.
For 2024, the authorities expect peak traffic volumes and an increase in speeding. Relzow leads the table of speeding violations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 9,860 registered trips. Stricter monitoring awaits drivers in the future, and the new speed cameras will certainly do their part to make the roads safer - drivers in the district should be prepared for this.
