Soibelmann's sports hotel about to close: jobs at risk!

The Soibelmanns Sporthotel in Samtens, a popular destination for active holidaymakers, is currently under discussion. According to a report by the Baltic Sea newspaper The operators plan to close the hotel in the off-season. This raises concerns that the closure may not be temporary. A closer look reveals that hardly any investments have been made in the hotel's infrastructure since it was taken over from bankruptcy seven years ago, which is now having a negative impact. It is tragic that all of the hotel's employees were laid off, which is a common occurrence in the region as well as in the Employment agency found that unemployment can increase by up to 75% in the off-season.

Of particular concern is the closure of the swimming pool, whose use for physical education classes in surrounding schools is at risk. Those responsible expect further developments regarding the hotel next spring 2024. In order to mitigate the negative effects of the closure, qualification programs could be offered by the employment agency in the winter months to offer affected employees new perspectives.

The future of the labor market

The current situation not only affects the employees at the Soibelmanns Hotel. The labor market situation in Western Pomerania-Rügen shows that there was a slight decrease in unemployment in June 2023. Nevertheless, 9,343 people in the district are currently unemployed, a decrease of 254 people or 2.6% compared to the previous month. The stability of the labor market is crucial for the region, with the tourism sector being seen as a driving force.

As Dirk Hausweiler, the operational managing director of the employment agency, emphasizes, the economic structure in Western Pomerania-Rügen is heavily influenced by tourism. Unemployment on Rügen has fallen by 128 people, while Stralsund has the highest unemployment rate in the agency district at 12.1%. Hotels like the Soibelmanns Sporthotel play an essential role in securing employment this season.

Changes in Bergen and gastronomy campaign

There is also news in Bergen. The city administration is looking for a new main office manager because the long-time head of office Steffen Ulrich has left the city administration. The change has an impact on several areas, including human resources, social affairs and education. As in the article Baltic Sea newspaper mentioned, applications are now welcome and suitable candidates will be presented to the main committee.

Another highlight is the OZ “Gastronomy of the Year” campaign, which provides a boost to the local gastronomy scene. The jury, which decides which catering establishments receive an award, received around 1,400 suggestions. Proposals can still be submitted until September 24th. The award ceremony will take place on November 17th as part of the GastRo trade fair in Rostock and will certainly be a big event for all gourmets and restaurant lovers in the region.

Film projects on the island

These developments and changes in the region show that, despite challenges in the hotel and catering sector as well as in the labor market, there are numerous opportunities to promote the quality of life in Western Pomerania-Rügen and to strengthen the community. Let's see what the future brings!
