On Friday morning, around 9:30 a.m., a dramatic incident was reported in the mother-child clinic in Baabe on the island of Rügen. A deflagration in the kitchen area led to thick smoke, which promptly called the emergency services to the scene. Over 120 firefighters, police and emergency services arrived in large numbers to deal with the situation, as the Ostsee-Zeitung reports.

The evacuation of the entire building was initiated immediately. Firefighters from surrounding towns, including Baabe, Sellin, Göhren, Lancken-Granitz and Middelhagen, were deployed. Two emergency doctors and 20 first aiders from the “Rapid Response Group Rescue” were also at the scene. Fortunately, only three kitchen employees were slightly injured and treated at the scene, somewhat alleviating the severity of the situation.

What happened is also reflected in the quick reaction of the emergency services: after a thorough check, the fire department gave the all-clear. There was no open fire and the clinic was able to resume operations after about two hours.
