The Rügensche Bäderbahn opened its doors at Putbus train station on June 14th and 15th, 2025 and invited visitors to an exciting open day. The event attracted numerous railway enthusiasts who had the opportunity to visit the newly opened workshop, which was put into operation last year. In addition, the legendary Köf 6009 was presented in the wagon hall together with historical wagons [ 1 ].
A special highlight of the festival were the cab rides on the steam locomotive 99 4652, where visitors were able to experience an incomparable driving experience. At midday the special train 01 0509-8 from Leipzig also arrived in Putbus. Historic trains such as the 86 1744-1 and the EBS V200 507 were in use and created a nostalgic atmosphere [ 2 ].
A festival for young and old
There were numerous activities available for the whole family throughout the day. The children could look forward to a mini train and a model train, while the adults were able to purchase souvenirs and memorabilia. The Piglet taxis 172 140-6 and 172 141-4 ran between Bergen auf Rügen and Lauterbach Mole, and for steam locomotive fans there were also special trips with the "Rasenden Roland", which ran from Putbus to Binz. A total of four trips were made with the 53 Mh locomotive and the brown Rü.K.B. passenger cars. carried out [ 1 ].
The station festival is organized annually by the Rügensche BäderBahn and the support association for the preservation of the Rügenschen Kleinbahn e.V. The event is aimed not only at railway enthusiasts, but also at families and history buffs who want to learn more about the history and significance of the railway [ 1 ].
A look at history
The Rügensche Bäderbahn, often known as the “Rasender Roland”, is a historic narrow-gauge railway on the beautiful island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Since its founding in 1895, the railway has operated with a gauge of 750 mm and connects the popular seaside resorts on Rügen. The “Rasende Roland” has a top speed of 30 km/h and is part of local public transport [ 2 ].
In Germany there is a rich tradition of museum railways that run historic trains and are operated by various clubs. These trains not only offer nostalgic rides, but also the opportunity to take part in themed rides such as dinner or St. Nicholas rides [ 3 ].
The event in Putbus is a small but important part of this tradition, which keeps the history of rail transport alive and inspires future generations for the fascination of trains.
