Dozens of packages torn open in Blievenstorf – police are investigating!

The waves are rising in the Ludwigslust-Parchim region after almost 60 torn open packages from an online mail order company were found near Neustadt-Glewe last Thursday. These packages were lying on the side of the road, behind the Alt Brenz exit in the direction of Blievenstorf. It appears as if the packages, whose origin and contents are currently unclear, were presumably disposed of in the first half of the week. The police have started an investigation and there are suspicions of theft and embezzlement. Anyone who noticed anything suspicious between Monday 9:30 a.m. and Wednesday 9:45 a.m. is asked to contact the Ludwigslust police station on 03874 4110.

Since many online mail order companies are offering promotions and discounts this week, some customers in the area are waiting in vain for their orders. About two months ago, a similar incident occurred in West Mecklenburg in which 45 packages were stolen from a delivery vehicle. What was particularly explosive was that the driver of the vehicle disappeared without a trace after the incident, and the stolen packages were worth around 10,000 euros. These packages were marked as delivered, making the situation even more delicate.

The dark side of online trading

Recent incidents shed light on the risks in online trading. It's not just theft and embezzlement that are a problem. The retail industry also faces challenges in the digital space. According to a security study by the trade association, BMI and crime prevention, 86% of Austrian retailers have already been confronted with crime, with 42% even being affected multiple times. The annual loss caused by shoplifting in Austria amounts to over 500 million euros, which accounts for more than 0.6% of total retail sales. And it goes even further: cybercrime is on the rise, and in 2024 an increase in crimes in brick-and-mortar retail and e-commerce was recorded. 64% of domestic online shops suffered from cybercrime and order fraud.

The security situation is also reflected in consumer habits. 27% of consumers have already been victims of fake online shops, often in the fashion, electronics and travel sectors. Therefore, 57% of online retailers rely on secure payment methods, with credit cards being the most popular option at 84%. Especially in this day and age, it is essential to remain vigilant and take safety measures. A look at the perpetrators' methods shows that manipulated card readers designed specifically for ATMs are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

Be careful with ATMs

We often hear about unscrupulous fraudsters installing manipulated card readers or even complete front panels in front of ATMs. These devices are usually visually adapted so that they are not noticeable at first glance and can transport the bank cards inconspicuously. The account details obtained are stored without affecting the ATM itself. The method in which PIN entries are recorded with integrated cameras is particularly sensitive. The perpetrators then use the obtained data to withdraw money from the victims' accounts. Such incidents make it even more urgent to exercise caution both when shopping online and when making cash withdrawals.

In times when shopping experiences are becoming increasingly digital, it remains important to maintain the necessary tact and be attentive. Ultimately, securing your own data and goods is of utmost importance for every consumer.
