E-scooter chaos in Rostock: City demands clear order for safety!

In Rostock, e-scooters are once again the focus of public discussion. The Left, Green and Volt factions have joined forces and are calling for clearer rules for the use and parking of electric scooters in the city. According to NDR, there are reports of complaints about carelessly parked e-scooters that block sidewalks and make walking difficult for people with limited mobility and families with strollers.

Christian Albrecht, the chairman of the Left Party, emphasizes how important it is to ensure security and order in public spaces. He makes it clear that the city should not only take responsibility for the use of e-scooters, but also for their parking. With a motion to be presented at the next town hall meeting, the parliamentary groups are calling for the introduction of a fair, traffic-safe free-floating system where e-scooters can be rented and parked without fixed stations.

Clear parking and control

The new application aims to improve municipal control of e-scooters and create a system that makes it more difficult for providers to easily park them on sidewalks, at stops or on guide lanes for the blind. Concrete measures such as geofencing and photo documentation are intended to help prevent improper parking. Christian Albrecht calls for urban development of operating and parking ban zones that address this problem.

The discussion about parking e-scooters is also broader in the important debate about the quality of life in Rostock. Transport is seen as central to access to work, education and leisure. The German Association of Cities shows that transport policy is crucial for quality of life, health and also for the environment. More and more cities are committed to finding sustainable mobility solutions, and Rostock should not be left behind here.

The relevant applicants emphasize that the city administration and the providers of e-scooters should work together to develop a concept to take this challenging issue into account. The legal liability of providers for incorrectly parked scooters is also required in order to distribute responsibility more clearly.

A look forward

This application will be discussed in various committees in the coming weeks and a resolution by the citizens is planned for July 23rd. The city is therefore faced with the task of integrating e-scooters not only as a practical means of transport, but also as part of a safe and equal transport system. Rostock could thus become a role model when it comes to designing modern mobility responsibly and making traffic less stressful for everyone.

At the beginning of July, the debate about the e-scooter business in Rostock is likely to gain even more momentum, and citizens can hope for clear solutions that take both the fun of the new mobility and road safety into account.
