Friedländer Bahn receives 9 million euros for major expansion until 2026!
The Friedländer Bahn in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania district is facing a comprehensive renovation that is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. How NDR reports, the line between Friedland and Neubrandenburg, which stretches over 20 kilometers, will be equipped with a new track from December 2025. This represents a significant milestone for the region’s infrastructure.
The first necessary services have already been put out to tender and the awarding of the contracts should be completed by the end of August 2025. The aim of the project is to significantly increase the speed of freight trains, currently a maximum of 15 km/h, while the aim is to reach up to 70 km/h after completion. Nine million euros are available for the comprehensive project, with the majority being financed by federal and state funds.
Economic stimulus and transport increases
The city of Neubrandenburg and the Mecklenburg Lake District are actively committed to repairs, as is the case Northern Courier reported. Both municipalities are securing guarantees of 1.525 million euros each to enable federal funding. A total of around 3 million euros will flow into the renovation of the railway line.
The Friedländer Bahn has a long history: passenger traffic was stopped in 1994, while freight traffic has only been running again under certain conditions since 2022. The trains currently transport finished products such as fertilizer. After the renovation, grain, lime, wood and many other goods will also be transported, with a forecast annual transport output of 100,000 to 120,000 tons. This amount corresponds to around 2,800 truck transports and shows the high potential of rail to relieve road traffic.
The renewal of the bridge between Ihlenfeld and Neverin is another aspect of the project. Costs of around 1.5 million euros are estimated for the bridge renovation, although funding from the state and district is being examined. This not only offers economic stimulus, but also improves connections for companies such as Friedländer Landhandel, which relies on reliable rail infrastructure.
Mobility offensive for the future
The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania sees great opportunities in this expansion project, both for passenger and freight transport. The mobility offensive presented in April 2023 aims to create connectivity between different modes of transport. This initiative is intended to help make rail transport more attractive and, in the long term, to shift more traffic from road to rail.
There is great anticipation about the new opportunities, not only among policymakers, but also among local entrepreneurs who will benefit from improved infrastructure. The project has the potential to increase the quality of life in the region and is a good step in the right direction for sustainable transport planning that also takes environmentally conscious aspects into account.
