Construction of the new emergency response center in Greifswald will start soon!
In Greifswald, on Monday, August 31, 2025, construction work will begin on a modern emergency response center (GAZ), which will be built on the premises of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district office on Feldstrasse. This emerges from a report by NDR, which highlights the importance of the project and the latest developments. The preparations, which took a week to cover the area previously used as a parking lot, have now been completed and the area is fenced off.
The new center will house a three-story building on an area of 1,500 square meters. It will not only accommodate the region's integrated control center, but also emergency services, the teleemergency doctor and the fire protection center. With estimated construction costs of around 34 million euros, this center is intended to bundle all emergency services and thus improve efficiency and speed of reaction in the event of a disaster, says the news agency for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
An important step for disaster protection
The construction of the emergency response center is a direct response to the increasing demands in disaster control, which are, among other things, increased by global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. Numerous international institutions, including GIZ, report that catastrophic events such as floods and earthquakes have long-term effects on society and often hit vulnerable groups the hardest.
The Greifswald project ensures that the region is better prepared for such emergencies. Bringing all emergency services together in one place promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and optimizes processes in the event of an emergency. Previously, the various emergency response organizations were often faced with the challenge of acting in a coordinated and quick manner, which is essential in emergency situations.
Parking and traffic flow
With the start of construction, the parking situation at the district office will also change. The parking lot will be closed to third-party parkers to ensure traffic flow and to ensure that there is enough space for emergency vehicles. Residents and visitors previously had to adapt to the occasionally available parking spaces, which will no longer be the case - especially since there will only be a few parking options for district office employees and visitors. The site will also be closed outside of opening hours.
This comprehensive project is intended to have an impact far beyond the borders of Greifswald. GIZ emphasizes that well-structured disaster risk management is of great importance. It enables better risk avoidance, which ultimately helps to adequately take risks into account in urban development and other economic planning. In this sense, the new security center will not only be a building, but also a means for sustainable and future-oriented security architecture in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
