German cutter rowing championship: Greifswald in competition fever!
On September 12th and 13th, 2025, the Greifswalder Ryck will become the competition arena for the German Cutter Rowing Championships. Organized by the Greifswalder Seesportclub, which is hosting this prestigious event for the first time this year, spectators can look forward to exciting competitions. Katrin Stegemann, the club's chairwoman, and her team have made great preparations. On Saturday, long-distance races over 5,000 meters are on the program, while on Sunday the athletes have to master a short distance of 1,000 meters. The number of participants is considerable: 30 teams from eastern Germany have already registered, and local teams will also be taking part.
But it's not just the athletes who will be working at full speed on the two days of competition. The Ryck will be partially closed during the races to ensure that the event runs smoothly. Hosting the championship costs an estimated 15,000 euros, which is supported by local sponsors. Corporate partners such as Sparkasse Vorpommern, Stadtwerke Greifswald and other local companies provide important resources to make this competition a success. The goal of the SSC Greifswald women's team is to achieve a top time in the competition, and it will be interesting to see whether they will achieve this.
A festival for all water sports enthusiasts
The German cutter rowing championship is not only a sporting highlight, but also an important part of the regional community. Spectators are welcome to watch the races along the towpath and give their support to the athletes. At a time when water sports are growing in popularity, this event helps foster a sense of community in the area. The event is also marked by a trend: more and more people are discovering the joy of water sports, whether rowing, sailing or stand-up paddling, and not just in Greifswald. In 2023, around 534,000 people were organized in swimming clubs and the German Rowing Association had around 86,000 members.
Water sports have a long tradition in Germany and appeal to different age groups and body types. Other sports such as sailing and diving are also very popular. Nevertheless, surfing often suffers from unfavorable conditions because there are only a limited number of suitable surfing spots in Germany. A good example of the positive development of water sports is the German Canoe Association, which managed to reach a peak of around 128,000 members in 2023.
The German cutter rowing championship in Greifswald promises to be an exciting event for athletes and spectators alike - a real celebration for the water sports community in Germany. If you can't watch the competition live on site, you shouldn't miss the opportunities that water sports offer in this beautiful country.
