Celebrate in Greifswald: MV Day and 775 years of city history!
On June 17, 2025, Greifswald is ready to celebrate a very special week. The Hanseatic city with around 60,000 inhabitants will host the 15th Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Day from June 20th to 22nd, 2025. With the motto “Tradition, Innovation, Diversity”, this community and state festival promises not only a cheerful atmosphere, but also numerous events and activities for all age groups. This week of celebrations will also honor Greifswald's 775th anniversary, which will be celebrated from May 14th to 18th, 2025 with an extensive program that underlines the cultural and historical significance of the city.
A highlight of the festival will be the traditional MV Day, which will take place in the picturesque old town of Greifswald, known for its historic merchants' houses and brick churches. Here, Germany's largest museum harbor with over 50 traditional ships becomes the scene of elaborate performances and culinary delicacies. The University of Greifswald, which was founded in 1456 and is one of the oldest educational institutions in Northern Europe, will also play a central role.
A special year for art
In 2024, Greifswald will also be celebrated as the birthplace of the most important German Romantic artist, Caspar David Friedrich. The Pomeranian State Museum is organizing an extensive program to mark its 250th birthday. From March to December you can marvel at Friedrich's paintings and drawings, including the masterpiece “Chalk Cliffs on Rügen”, which is being exhibited for the first time in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The city, which experienced a tourist boom last year with over 100,000 guests and 310,000 overnight stays, is counting on another strong year in tourism.
The Pomeranian State Museum reports on an exciting anniversary year that will bring Friedrich's life and work to life.
The celebration of Frederick's birthday includes several special exhibitions and interactive experiences that allow visitors to immerse themselves in his era. The Greifswald Literary Spring from March 21 to April 26, 2025 and the Nordic Sound from May 2 to 11, 2025, which promotes cultural exchange with the Nordic countries, will also be part of these festivities.
A colorful program for young and old
Preparations for MV Day are already in full swing and promise an exciting event for all visitors. Twelve experience areas will be created in the city center that combine culture, cuisine and music. The start on June 20th will be celebrated with a big party by the Ostseewelle, at which the band Marquess will perform, among others. In addition, the oldest music festival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Greifswalder Bachwoche, takes place from June 16th to 22nd and offers numerous concerts and events.
The MV day Greifswald is not only a festival for the city itself, but also an attraction for tourists who want to enjoy the attractive combination of history and the present.
Overall, the celebrations in Greifswald promise to be a colorful mosaic of tradition, innovation and diversity - a perfect opportunity to experience the fascination of this beautiful city on the Ryck and let yourself be captivated by its special charm!
